FULL RESULTS LEHIGH
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (Feb. 3, 2014) – The Saint Francis women's tennis team pulled off a solid 4-3 win at Bucknell on Saturday, but fell by a 5-2 margin at Lehigh on Sunday to split in weekend action.
The mixed results move the Red Flash to 3-2 on the young season.
"I was proud of the way the women competed against Bucknell," said SFU coach
Rob Castille. "They are a well-coached team and have a lot of talent and our ladies stepped up to the challenge. The doubles point proved to be the difference and this is something we have been working on hard in practice. Having lost to this team 5-2 last year, I am pleased with the improvement in this team."
In both matches, the Flash started fast to claim the critical doubles point.
Against the Bison, the Nos. 2 and 3 duos of Dani Gryckiewicz/
Alex Sachs (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) and
Brittini Jentz (Plano, Texas/Ursuline Academy of Dallas)/
Lucy Jasso (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Instituto Potosino) sealed the first team point of the day. On Sunday, however, some shuffling resulted in a sweep of doubles action.
Sachs/Gryckiewicz, Rafael Panizza/
Taya Zoubareva (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest ) and Jasso/
Shivani Patel (Leicestershire, England/Repton School) all walked off with wins against the Mountain Hawks.
The difference between the two outcomes boiled down to singles play.
In Saturday's triumph, Patel, Sachs and Gryckiewicz all pulled off fairly easy wins to sweep the Nos. 3-5 positions.
Only No. 4 Sachs was able to continue her success in Sunday's action.
"Against Lehigh, I was pleased with the way the women came out in doubles," said Castille. "But I felt in singles, our energy was not where it needed to be. Maybe the emotions from a big win the night before caught up to us. Lehigh definitely raised their level of play from doubles and deserved to win. Against such a talented team, we really needed to compete at our best to have a chance. We will learn from this and be better for the next match."
