OLEAN, N.Y. (Jan. 28, 2014) – Saint Francis U women's tennis squad claimed its second consecutive win in, 5-2, fashion over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies (0-1) Wednesday afternoon.
The Red Flash (2-1) took an early, 1-0, lead in doubles as
Taya Zoubareva (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest ) and
Rafaela Panizza (Jundiai, Brazil/) fought a close No. 1 doubles, downing the Bonnies, 7-5.
Alex Sachs (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) and
Danielle Gryckiewicz (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Academy) clinched doubles for the Red Flash, topping the No. 2 doubles, 6-1. Saint Francis won No. 3 doubles by default.
"This was a good test for the girls and I am happy that they were able to get the win," said Head Coach Rob Castile. "St. Bonaventure was down a couple players because of injuries and sometimes that can have a negative effect on your mindset going into the match. I told the girls to go into the match thinking we were down two players and needed every point. I was pleased with their focus and effort against a very scrappy St. Bonaventure squad."
Saint Francis continued to control the match by overpowering the Bonnies in singles.
Shivani Patel (Leicestershire, England/Repton School) defeated Mara Martinez-Santori, 6-4, 6-2, in No. 3 singles sealing the Red Flash victory. SFU picked up another point in No. 4 singles as
Brittini Jentz (Plano, Texas/Ursuline Academy of Dallas) overcame an early setback downing M. Shirtladze, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0, (4). SFU won No. 5 and 6 singles by default.
Saint Francis returns to action Feb. 1 against the Bucknell Bison, the women are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
