BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's volleyball team jumped out to a two games to none lead on Pfeiffer on Friday night at DeGol Arena, but the Falcons (3-4) fought back to win game three and held a late lead in game four before the Red Flash (4-3) went on a run to win the game and the match. SFU won 25-23, 25-21, 25-27 and 25-21.
Both teams hit well in game one, but the Flash's .485 on the power of 18 kills to just two errors pushed the team to the victory.
Kyle Beatty (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) led the Red Flash with four kills on eight tries.
Mike Marshman (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) had three kills on four attempts, and
Mark Kochan (Towaco, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) had three in five tries. SFU led the match by as many as four points on multiple occasions, but a 3-0 run by the Falcons tied the score at 21-21. The Flash scored three of the next four points, including a kill from Kochan. Marshman sealed the game with his third kill of the set for the 25-23 win.
Beatty came out smoking in game two, registering the first two kills of the set. A pair of Kochan kills along with an
Adam Barba (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) ace paced a 6-1 run for SFU as it took a 10-4 lead. An ace by Marshman pushed the lead to its largest point at 18-9. But a 7-1 Pfeiffer run to tighten the score to 22-19 forced a timeout by Flash head coach
Mike Rumbaugh. SFU righted the ship at it finished off game two, 25-21.
Beatty hit 1.000 for the second consecutive set in game three with his three kills. One of those capped a 4-0 run to put SFU ahead 13-8.
Nick Bennett (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) scored to give the Flash a 24-22 lead for match point. Pfeiffer scored the next three points, however, to push the frame into extras.
Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) tied it at 25-25, but Pfeiffer scored the final two points to stave off elimination.
The Falcons pushed ahead in a closely contested game four as neither team could pull away. Pfeiffer held a 21-19 lead as it looked to push the match to the limit, but the Flash went on a 6-0 run to end the comeback attempt. Kills by Patterson, Beatty, Kochan and the winner by Kresch fueled the rally that also included a Barba block. SFU took the decider 25-21.
Saint Francis his .368 for the match, with Beatty leading the charge with 14 kills (.522). Patterson had 11 kills and Marshman hit .636 with eight kills. Kochan also had six kills in nine tries with just one error. Pfeiffer hit just .238 for the match, including .160 in the fourth game.
