BOX SCORE COLUMBUS – Senior
Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) recorded 18 kills while hitting .500 on Sunday at No. 14 Ohio State, but the Buckeyes held off the Red Flash for a 3-1 victory. Ohio State won 25-19, 29-31, 25-23 and 25-17.
After a Buckeye service error in game one cut their lead to 17-16, OSU scored five consecutive points to seemingly take control of the match. Down by six, the Red Flash countered with a three-point run off Ohio State errors with
Ray Frazer (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) serving to cut the lead to 22-19. Ohio State countered with a timeout and the final three points of the set.
Mark Kochan (Towaco, N.J./Seton Hall Prep)'s kill put the Red Flash ahead in the second set, 24-23. After Ohio State scored two points to earn a set point opportunity, SFU countered with two of its own to take a 26-25 lead. The Red Flash wouldn't trail again in the set as it pushed to a game point opportunity four more times.
Adam Barba (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) and Kochan each recorded two kills in the overtime. After Kochan made it 30-29 with a kill, Patterson's block on the ensuing point gave the Flash the game two victory.
SFU (5-4) carried that momentum into the third set as it didn't trail until 12-11. The score would be even at 15 apiece and again at 20-20 after a kill by
Kyle Beatty (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) and a block by Kochan. Patterson registered another kill after an OSU timeout to give the Flash a 21-20 lead. The teams traded points with ensuing kills from Kochan and Barba putting the Flash ahead, 23-22. That would be SFU's final point of the set, though, as OSU used two kills and a block to take the third set, 25-23.
Beatty had two kills in SFU's first three points of game four, but the quick start faded as Ohio State scored six of the next seven points to take a 7-4 lead. That would be as close as the fourth game would be as Ohio State earned the match victory with a 25-17 win. Barba finished with 14 kills while Kochan had eight kills and eight block assists along with a solo block. Mike Kresch had 41 assists and Beatty led the team with six digs.
