FULL RESULTS MOUNT ST. MARY'S
EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 19, 2014) – The Red Flash men's tennis team pulled to within a match of .500 over the weekend with a pair of Northeast Conference wins over Robert Morris and Mount St. Mary's. Saint Francis trounced the Colonials 6-1 on Saturday before edging the Mountaineers 4-3 on Sunday.
"I am really proud of the way the guys stepped up this weekend," said first-year SFU coach
Rob Castille. "We hadn't practiced or played outside since October so we knew this was going to be a big challenge. With 20 mile-per-hour winds, the conditions were definitely not ideal but the guys did not let any of that affect them and they were able to come away with two conference wins against two solid teams."
Wins out of the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles positions lifted SFU (5-6) to its first point of the day and it never looked back. The Frankie tandem of
Sergio Carvajal (Nueva Esparta, Venezuela/U.E. Fray Elias Maria Sendra) and
Chris Jimenez (Bayside, N.Y./St. Francis Preparatory) rolled to an 8-1 victory at No. 2, while
Kyle Korus (Toronto, Ontario/Niagara Academy) and
Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School) took an 8-3 decision.
Washi Gervais (Longueuil, Quebec/College Stanislas) got the ball rolling in singles play with an 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 1 position.
After Robert Morris pulled out a win at No. 2 to make the score 2-1, the rest of the Flash lineup took care of business for the easy team win.
In Sunday's action versus Mount St. Mary's, Carvajal outlasted Mike Zabetakis in three sets in the No. 5 match to clinch the team win.
Gervais and
Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) teamed up for an important win at No. 1 doubles, and Jimenez/Carvajal followed suit at the No. 2 position to clinch the first team point of the day.
Gervais and Jimenez picked up SFU's two other singles wins.
