FULL RESULTS MOUNT ST. MARY'S
Emmitsburg, Md. (March 20, 2014) – Saint Francis U women's tennis picked up a pair wins this weekend at the Mount Tennis Courts. Friday afternoon the Red Flash downed the Robert Morris Colonials 6-1.
Following Fridays win Saint Francis continued to strive with a 6-1 victory over Mount St. Mary's, improving to 2-0 over the weekend.
SFU (6-4; 2-1) swept doubles to begin Friday afternoon taking an early 1-0 advantage over the Colonials. Heading into singles the Frankies made quick work of Robert Morris (0-10; 0-1).
Alex Sachs (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) won at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-0 setback of Larissa Kiyoku, while San Luis Potosi, Mexico native
Lucy Jasso (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Instituto Potosino) downed Diana Mirceta in No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-1.
Shivani Patel (Leicestershire, England/Repton School) clinched the match winning point for the Red Flash in a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Marie-Sophie Heine. Saint Francis sweetened their victory as
Taya Zoubareva (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest ) and
Brittini Jentz (Plano, Texas/Ursuline Academy of Dallas) won No. 5 and 6 singles.
"This was a big weekend for us and I am happy to come away with two conference wins," said head coach
Rob Castille. "I'm really pleased with how the girls handled the tough conditions (20mph wins) and were able to not let the elements affect them. We hadn't practiced or played a match outside since October so I am very proud of the way they competed and how smart they played."
Saturday evening the Red Flash (7-4; 3-1) concluded Northeast Conference play with a 6-1 triumph over Mount St. Mary's (5-6; 0-2).
The Frankies began the day by winning doubles, clinching the point in No. 3 doubles as Jentz and Jasso downed Erin Benefiel and Taylor D'Agostino 8-2.
Jasso extended SFU's lead with a No. 4 singles win over Taylor D'Agostino 6-1, 6-0. Patel won No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-1 setting up Sachs for match winning point. Sachs finalized the Red Flash win with a 6-4, 6-2 No. 3 singles win over Kelly Smith of The Mount.
Danielle Gryckiewicz (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Academy) earned a No. 5 singles victory with a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0(3) setback of Erin Benefiel. Freshman Zoubareva earned Saint Francis's last point of the match in No. 6 singles with a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0(16) triumph.
March 22 the Red Flash return to action La Salle.
