JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (April 15, 2014) – Sophomore
Edward Maruca (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria) earned a top-five finish to lead the Saint Francis University men's golf team to a fifth place finish at the Red Flash Invitational held at Sunnehanna Country Club.
Originally scheduled for three rounds, weather shortened the tournament to just two rounds, which were both played on Monday. SFU carded a two-round score of 617 (317-300). Robert Morris won the team title with a 579 (287-292). This was the first tournament Saint Francis has hosted since the 2010-11 season.
Maruca finished with a 147 (78-69) and carded the second-best score of the tournament in round two.
Kevin Fawcett (London, Ontario, Canada/Oakridge Secondary) placed second for SFU and 15th overall after posting a 152 (77-75).
Chris Stricek (Binghamton, N.Y./Windsor) finished third for Saint Francis and 28th overall after registering a 158 (79-79). Kyle Krount placed fourth for the Red Flash and 37th overall after shooting a 160 (83-77).
James Ferguson (Altoona, Pa./Tyrone) rounded out the players in the field for SFU and placed 40th with a 163 (84-79).
Saint Francis also had another team compete in the home invitational, which finished seventh overall.
Shane Crampton (London, Ontario, Canada/Saunders Secondary) led the second squad with a 150 (75-75), which placed him 10th overall.
Jeff Chastel (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) earned a 15th overall finish after posting a 152 (79-73).
Saint Francis has a short turnaround as it is back in action this weekend at the Navy Spring Invitational on April 17-19. This will be the final tune-up meet before SFU travels to Daytona Beach, Fla. for the Northeast Conference Championship on May 2-4.
