Red Flash outlasts Sacred Heart for EIVA win

BOX SCORE FAIRFIELD, Conn. (April 5, 2014) – Sacred Heart climbed out of a two-set hole to force a decisive fifth set, but Saint Francis U was able to clinch a 3-2 (25-18, 25-20, 13-25, 16-25, 15-8) win Friday night at the Pitt Center.  The victory gave the Red Flash a season sweep of the Pioneers in addition to snapping a seven-match slide.

Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) led Saint Francis with 10 kills on the evening, while Lucas Behringer (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) came up with a team-high nine digs.  Mark Kochan (Towaco, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) assisted on 10 blocks to lead both squads.

The Red Flash opened the match with a 6-1 run for an early lead, but a five-point Sacred Heart run gave the Pioneers a 7-6 edge. Back-and-forth action caused the score to tie six times throughout the first set. With the score knotted at 15 all, five consecutive SHU errors boosted SFU to a 19-15 lead. From there the Red Flash closed with a 6-3 run to claim a 1-0 lead.

After falling behind 7-4 in the second set, a Kochan kill sparked a 6-1 Red Flash run to claim a lead it would not relinquish. SFU outscored SHU two-to-one for the rest of the set to gain a 2-0 edge in the match.

The Pioneers bounced back in sets three and four to even the score at 2-2, but Saint Francis was able to capitalize on 10 Sacred Heart errors to easily claim the fifth set and the match.

The Red Flash continues its road trip on Saturday with a 7 p.m. visit to Harvard.
