PITTSBURGH, PA (September 12, 2014) – The Saint Francis U men's tennis team competed in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational. The men competed in both singles and doubles winning three out of ten matches in doubles competition, and six of twenty singles matches.
"I'm disappointed in how we competed this weekend. It's not the results I am upset or worried about. But, I stress over and over again that we need to compete at our very best each and every match. That means staying mentally tough, fighting for every point, and staying positive. We did not do that this past weekend," said SFU head coach
Rob Castille.
The senior duo of
Sergio Carvajal (Nueva Esparta, Venezuela/U.E. Fray Elias Maria Sendra) and
Chris Jimenez (Bayside, N.Y./St. Francis Preparatory) worked to shut out Carnegie Mellon's first team 6-0.
Carvajal and Jimenez both continued to work during the invitational, going on to win two of their three matches in singles competition.
"I hope the guys realize that they cannot just show up for matches and expect to win. I am hopeful that this was a good wakeup call for the team. Both Carnegie Mellon and Duquesne have very good players and if we want to reach their level, the guys now see the things they need to do and just how hard they need to work. I'll make sure that point is driven home," Castille continued.
