BROOKLYN, N.Y.- LIU Brooklyn's Rasmus Hansen scored from 25 yards out five minutes into overtime as Saint Francis dropped their second match of the weekend, falling 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The loss drops the Red Flash to 6-5-3 overall and 1-2 in the Northeast Conference while LIU moves to 7-5-2 overall and are 4-0-0 in the NEC.
The Flash came out pushing on offense early as
Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) and
Troye Kiernan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) each put shots high. Following a LIU corner kick, the Flash countered with
Conner Rezende (Davie, Fla. /University School at Nova Southeastern) firing a shot wide. The Blackbirds would push offensively midway through the half. LIU had a shot blocked and another sail high following a corner kick. LIU continued to press as
Andrew Garcia (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) made a pair of saves, sandwiched around a pair of corner kicks. Late in the half,
Andres Vega (Managua, Nicaragua/Colegio Centro America) put a shot on target, but it was deflected away by Logan Keys. The Flash could not do anything on the ensuing corner kick and the match went to the half scoreless.
The second half mirrored the first, with the Flash pressuring early. Saint Francis earned a pair of corner kicks, the second coming after a big Logan Keys save on
Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township). LIU looked to counter, but their shot sailed high.
Francis de Vries (Christchurch, New Zealand/Cashmere) was denied by Keys off a free kick and Vega was stoned twice in the 61st minute. Neither team would threaten until late in the half when Simen Hestens for LIU was stopped by Garcia. Ninety minutes wasn't enough on Sunday as the game went to overtime.
In the extra frame, LIU had one shot sail high. In the 95th minute, Hansen ripped a shot into the upper-right 90 beating Garcia for the match's only goal.
The Red Flash will look to rebound next weekend as they host Bryant on Friday and FDU on Sunday. Friday's match starts at 3pm.
