BOX SCORE SMITFIELD, R.I. - The Saint Francis women's volleyball team fell 3-1 against Bryant on Sunday. After winning the first set 25-21, the Red Flash dropped three straight sets 25-17, 25-10 and 25-19. With the loss, SFU drops to 4-18 overall and 2-5 in the NEC play.
Breanna Opera (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster ) led the way for Saint Francis with 11 kills and four aces, while
Emily Marcinowski (Strongsville, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) added eight and
Maria Cup (Chesterland, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) had seven.
Amelia Metzler (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield) led the group with 37 of the teams 40 assists. Cup contributed with five blocks, while
Sophie Murdock (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion ) had four and Opera added three.
Jenna Veres (Independence, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) lead SFU with 16 digs while
Hannah Kutny (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) added 11 and
Kelsey Roush (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) finished with seven.
The Red Flash were off to a hot start in the first match, led by Opera's two aces and one kill. Saint Francis closed out the first match with three straight points to win, 25-21. Opera finished the set with three kills, while Murdock and Easter added two. Metzler dished out nine assists in the opening set.
In the second set, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 7-2 advantage. The Red Flash closed within three to make the score 14-11, but Bryant scored seven of the last 12 points the secure the second set win, 25-17. The Red Flash's Metzler had six assists while
Chelsea Easter (Burlington, Ontario, Canada/Notre Dame Roman Catholic) had two kills. Â Saint Francis held with Bryant early in the third set, but seven-straight points by the Bulldogs clinched the set, 25-10. Opera, Marinowski and Kunty accounted for seven kills in the set.
The fourth set was a back-and-fourth match as the Bulldogs took leads of 15-13 and 21-18, as the Red Flash went on a 3-0 run. Bryant would score the last three points to come up with the 25-19 victory. Â Kuntey led Saint Francis with four kills and Metzler added 12 assists.
The Red Flash travels to Robert Morris on Oct. 24 for a 3 p.m. match
