BOX SCORE 2 GREENSOBORO, N.C. (Feb. 13, 2015) – The Saint Francis softball team started of the 2015 campaign in grand fashion as it swept the first two games of the regular season, defeating Coppin State 17-1 and host NC A&T 4-0.
The game against CSU ended in the fifth inning via the mercy run rule. Game two the pitching staff shined as the SFU pitching staff combined to shutout Coppin State.
The Flash took no time getting on the board early in game one as
Taylor Parsons (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) ripped an RBI double in her first at-bat of the year to give SFU an early 1-0 lead. Saint Francis kept it's foot on the gas pedal as it continued the onslaught of the first inning, batting around and scoring 11 runs. Parsons added a triple to deep right field for her second hit of the inning to bring home another two runs.
Starting pitcher,
Blaire Lauthers (Doylesburg, Pa./Fannett-Metal) recorded two strikeouts in her season debut while working three innings.
Chelsea Rex (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) came in relief of Lauthers and blew the CSU away, registering five strikeouts in her two innings of work out of the bullpen.
Reigning NEC Rookie of the Year,
Alexis Bower (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport Area) took the mound in game two against NC A&T. In her first outing of the year, Bower was outstanding; striking out two over six scoreless innings.
The offense was not as potent as in game one, but the early run support was plenty enough for Bower.
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) came on in the seventh to close the door and recorded two strikeouts of her own to close the door on the Aggies.
Saint Francis U continues play tomorrow in the NC A&T tournament facing Coppin State and Morgan State. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
Full stats of this weekend's tournament will be posted when Saint Francis returns home at the beginning of the week.
