LORETTO, Pa. (April 16, 2015) – In just the second year under head coach
Rob Castille, the Saint Francis University women's tennis team looks to make a statement at the Northeast Conference Championships this weekend in West Windsor, N.J.
The Red Flash earned the No. 3 seed in the NEC Championship, which is the best-ever for the program. SFU will look to build on its NEC Semifinals appearance in 2014, which was also a program first.
"We are excited to get the #3 seed, but with that obviously comes some high expectations since it's the highest we've ever been," said Castille.
SFU beat the Pioneers in last season's Quarterfinals, except last season it was considered an upset as the Flash were the No. 5 seed. The Flash takes on Mount St. Mary's at 9 a.m. on Friday morning. SFU had its way with The Mount earlier this month as it bested them in shutout fashion, 7-0.
Saint Francis played some solid competition during the regular season and managed a 5-10 overall record. SFU went undefeated in NEC play as it bested Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-3, in addition to the win over MSM.
"The biggest thing I told the women is to make sure we compete at our best. We have just as good a chance as anyone to win," Castille continued.
The Flash also picked up their first-ever All-NEC selections last season.
Brittini Jentz (Plano, Texas/Ursuline Academy of Dallas) earned the nod at No. 6 singles and teamed with
Lucy Jasso (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Instituto Potosino) for All-NEC honors at No. 3 doubles.
Danielle Gryckiewicz and
Alex Sachs (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) were recognized at No. 2 doubles for SFU.
