LORETTO, Pa.-Â Saint Francis men's soccer made it two in a row this weekend, shutting out the Niagara Purple Eagles on a rainy Sunday afternoon at the Stokes SoccerPlex.Â
The Red Flash dominated the stat sheet on Sunday, out shooting Niagara by a whopping 27-4 margin, including 11-3 in shots on goal.Â
SFU started quickly with
Calvin Rezende (Davie, Fla. /University School at Nova Southeastern) getting an early scoring chance, but his shot from distance was knocked away by Niagara keeper Joel Gerberich. Freshmen twins
Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) and
Nicco Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) kept the pressure on Niagara throughout the first half. Mario had a shot blocked and another stopped by Gerberich in a Red Flash counter-attack fifteen minutes into the match. It remained scoreless until the 25th minute when
Pablo Medina (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academies) put a shot on target. Gerberich stopped it, but could not corral the rebound as
Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) put it into the net out of a scrum for his first collegiate goal to make it 1-0. Mario would lead the team with eight shots, four on goal on Sunday. Mastrangelo's goal was the lone tally in the first half as SFU went to the half up 1-0.Â
Right out of the halftime break, the Red Flash were on the attack again. Off a set piece,
Francis de Vries (Christchurch, New Zealand/Cashmere) had his attempt knocked away by Gerberich and
Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) had two chances to knock home a rebound, but was denied both times. Moments later, out of a corner kick Medina's shot was blocked and ruled a hand ball on Niagara, just outside the 18-foot box. de Vries parked the ensuing free kick into the upper-right 90 and off a sprawling Gerberich's hands for his second tally of the season to make it 2-0 in the 57th minute.
The Red Flash would threaten a few more times, especially off set pieces, but could not find the back of the net. The Saint Francis defense remained strong, limiting the Purple Eagle's chances. SFU surrendered only one corner kick in the match and starting keeper
Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) was not tested often. The junior did make two saves late in the match, including a diving save on a Ryan Myers' shot in the 90th minute, but preserved the clean sheet.Â
The victory runs the SFU record to 2-1-2 on the season. They will continue their home stand this Wednesday when they host George Washington. Match time is set for 3 p.m. at the Stokes SoccerPlex
