Men's Soccer Rolls Past George Washington

LORETTO, Pa.- Saint Francis got two early goals and ran their win streak to three with a 2-0 shutout of the George Washington Colonials on Wednesday afternoon at the Stokes SoccerPlex.

Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) scored in his second straight match, taking a Pablo Medina (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academies) feed and beating the keeper in the ninth minute to give the Red Flash an early lead. The goal came after an initial surge from GW where Andrew Garcia (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) had to make a tricky save in the early minutes.

Midway through the first half, Medina set up the second SFU goal, getting the ball to Conner Rezende (Davie, Fla. /University School at Nova Southeastern). The senior forward did the rest, faking out two defenders and bending a shot past the keeper and under the crossbar for the second Red Flash strike of the first half. Neither team threatened much the rest of the first half, Saint Francis had a few corner kicks but could not convert off the set pieces. It would be 2-0 at the break.

Right out of the break, the Flash were threatening again. Off a Pablo Medina (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academies) corner kick, a Francis de Vries (Christchurch, New Zealand/Cashmere) was cleared off the line by a pair of Colonial defenders. Down a pair of goals, the Colonials began to press to create chances. However, the Saint Francis backline was terrific once again. The Red Flash back four limited GW to just five second-half shots, only one on goal. Saint Francis out shot the Colonials 16-8 and 9-4 in shots on goal.

Garcia made four saves and earned his first win of the season and is now 1-1-2 on the year. The senior also picked up his third clean sheet of the season.

Saint Francis continues their home stand on Sunday as they host the Lehigh Mountain Hawks at 1 p.m. at the Stokes SoccerPlex.
