LORETTO, Pa.- Â Samantha Zeiders (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) turned aside all seven shots she faced and three different players scored in a 3-0 Saint Francis victory over the Rider Broncs at DeGol Field on Sunday afternoon.Â
The senior net minder led a defense that was razor sharp on Sunday. Zeiders turned away seven shots but the Red Flash fought off 11 penalty corners taken by the Broncs on Sunday, including eight in the second half. The shutout is Zeiders' third straight, blanking Colgate and Sienna last weekend as well and running her shutout streak to over 225 minutes of action.Â
Saint Francis took almost no time to score, as
Irene Fritschy (Zwolle, The Netherlands) put SFU on the scoreboard just 36 seconds into the game. After initial pressure from Rider, Fritschy dribbled through the defense and put in a shot from the top of the circle. The Broncs responded with continued pressure, but Zeiders made three saves midway through the first half to keep it a 1-0 contest. WIth five minutes left in the half, a
Selena Adamshick (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake-Lehman) shot turned into a penalty corner for the Red Flash. Off the ensuing corner,
Carly Gromel (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake-Lehman) picked up a loose ball in the chaos and put SFU up 2-0. That goal also chased Rider starting goal keeper Hannah Isaacs. The Red Flash would close the half short-handed after
Hannah Retherford (Benton, Pa./Benton) was sent off with a yellow card. Again, the Red Flash stepped up as Rider didn't threaten and the match went to the half with the Red Flash up 2-0.Â
In the second half, the Red Flash withstood six penalty corners from Rider in the first five minutes of the half. Zeiders and the defense continued to turn away the Broncs' attack and kept it a 2-0 game. In the 55th minute, the Red Flash took advantage of their own penalty corner. After an initial save on a Fritschy shot, Adamshick got the rebound and fed
Brianna Govia (St. James, Trinidad/Holy Name)Â for the goal to put the Flash up 3-0 as SFU ran their record to 4-3 on the season and handed Rider just their second loss.Â
Saint Francis now opens Atlantic-10 play next week when they travel to Virginia to take on the Rams of Virginia Commonwealth. The match is set for Sunday at 1p.m.
