Field Hockey Drops A-10 Opener in 2OT

RICHMOND, VA- The Red Flash peppered VCU with 23 shots and 15 shots on goal, but a Ram goal with 25 seconds left was the difference as SFU fell 2-1 in double overtime to the Rams in the Atlantic-10 opener for Saint Francis.

Saint Francis pressured for much of the first half. The Red Flash withstood an early Ram charge where goalkeeper Samantha Zeiders (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) got just enough of a shot to deflect it off the post. Midway through the half, SFU earned a pair of penalty corners. Selena Adamshick (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake-Lehman) had her shot stopped while Shannon Pereira (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Francis Libermann Catholic) put her attempt just wide. The Red Flash continued to push the pace, but could not solve VCU keeper Chessa Kownurko. Adamshick was stopped twice more by the keeper as was Brea Seabrook (Wilkes Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial). Following that push, VCU countered but Zeiders was up to the challenge, making a pair of saves to keep the match scoreless. Seabrook put the Flash on the board in the 26th minute, taking a Brianna Govia (St. James, Trinidad/Holy Name) feed and putting it past Kownurko. However, the lead would not last long. In the 33rd minute, VCU scored off a rebound as Lauren Kaup tied the match at 1. It would remain 1-1 going into the half.

The second half continued to see the Flash pressure, but to no avail. SFU took six shots in the second half, three on goal but couldn't find the go ahead tally. Irene Fritschy (Zwolle, The Netherlands) had a chance early in the half but Kownurko made another of her 14 saves. In the final seconds, Fritschy had one shot stopped by the keeper and a second denied on a team save and the match was headed to overtime.

In the first extra frame, SFU pushed hard for the game-winner, firing seven shots in the 15-minute frame. However, Kownurko made four saves and a fifth was blocked. Fritschy also saw a chance glance off the post in the 83rd minute, keeping the match tied at one. Zeiders was only challenged once in the first OT, but was up to the task, turning aside Kaup. With neither team finding the net, the game went to a second overtime.

The teams traded shots in the early minutes of the second overtime, with each goalie rising to the occasion. Kownurko made two more saves midway through the period off a SFU penalty corner, turning away the Flash yet again. Late in the match, VCU countered. After two shots were denied off a penalty corner, the Rams were able to score with just 25 seconds remaining.

The loss puts Saint Francis at 4-4 overall and 0-1 in Atlantic-10 play. The Red Flash will host Davidson on Friday in the A-10 home opener. Match time is set for 3 p.m. and can also be seen on NEC Front Row.
