LORETTO, Pa.-Â Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) scored his third game-winning goal of the year off a
Francis de Vries (Christchurch, New Zealand/Cashmere) long ball and the Red Flash knocked off Duquesne 1-0 at the Stoke SoccerPlex on Wednesday.Â
All of Mastrangelo's goals have been game winners this season and this one came in the 64th minute. de Vries played a long pass into the Duquesne box and Mastrangelo beat both his defender and the keeper to the ball. With the keeper off his line, the freshman chipped the ball just inside the near post for a 1-0 lead.Â
The goal came after a defensive-minded first half, where both teams played conservative. The Red Flash pressured midway through the half, earning two corner kicks off shots from Johnathan Otting and Mastrangelo.
Calvin Rezende (Davie, Fla. /University School at Nova Southeastern) had two chances blocked and a third saved during the push. SFU was strong defensively all match long, they surrendered two corner kicks but the Dukes put their lone shot of the half high. The half would end scoreless.Â
Right out of the second half gate, the Red Flash continued to pressure. Earning another corner kick, a Duke foul led to a free kick but Rezende's first shot was blocked and the rebound went wide as the match remained scoreless. SFU's pressure led to another set piece as
Jack Webber (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) put a header on target, but had it deflected wide. Duquesne thought to have withstood the Red Flash rush, but that's when de Vries found the streaking Mastrangelo for the match's lone goal.Â
The Dukes began to press, looking for the equalizer. However, the Red Flash would turn Duquesne's two set pieces into prime counter-attacks.
Troye Kiernan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) had a good scoring chance blocked and
Andres Vega (Managua, Nicaragua/Colegio Centro America) put another chance just high and wide.Â
In the final three minutes, the Dukes had their best scoring chances. Off a Saint Francis foul, Diego Vieira put his free kick into the SFU wall as did Collin Phillips. In the final seconds, Duquesne keeper Evan Kozlowski came up on a corner kick on a desperate push for an equalizer. His attempt as time expired deflected wide as SFU picked up their fifth victory of the year.Â
The Red Flash are back in action on Saturday night at DeGol Field. The West Virginia Mountaineers are in town for a 7:30 p.m. kick off.Â
