ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Saint Francis men's soccer team outshot Northern Kentucky on the first day of the Mayor's Cup at Hartwick University on Friday afternoon, but the Norse scored two second half goals to defeat the Red Flash, 2-0.
The teams played a scoreless first half, with Red Flash keeper
Andrew Garcia (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) making all three of his saves in the opening 45 minutes. SFU had four shots of its own in the first half, including two on goal, but NKU goalie A.J. Fleak held the Flash off the board. The Flash had a corner kick in the 17
th minute, but nothing came of the opportunity.
Calvin Murphy put Norse on top in the 59
th minute as Northern Kentucky made good on a corner kick of its own. The header by Murphy off the corner made it 1-0 NKU. The Flash had corners in the 72
nd and 81
st minutes as it looked to tie the score. On the first attempt,
Jack Webber (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) had his shot go wide. On the second try,
Francis de Vries (Christchurch, New Zealand/Cashmere) angled a header that went high.
Northern Kentucky put the match away with an insurance goal in the 86
th minute. Ronald Moss finished a cross from the left side to give the Norse a 2-0 lead.
Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) and de Vries each had two shots to lead the Red Flash.
SFU faces Mayor's Cup host Hartwick on Sunday at 3 p.m.
