Brittini Jentz (Plano, Texas/Ursuline Academy of Dallas) earned a singles win at No. 5. SFU is now 0-2 this spring. The Midshipmen improved to 2-1.
At the top doubles spot, senior
Rafaela Panizza (Jundiai, Brazil) and junior
Brittany Plaszewski (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) matched up against Navy's Audrey Channell and Anastasia Kondrasov. The Red Flash duo fell 6-4 in the set.
Senior
Dani Gryckiewicz (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Academy) and freshman
Stephanie Miller (Washington, D.C./St. John's College High School) combined in the match at No. 2, but dropped a 6-0 result to the Midshipmen's Rozel Hernandez and Kristine Rojo.
In the match at No. 3, Saint Francis freshman
Raksha Bode (Reunion, Fla./Florida Virtual School) and junior
Brittini Jentz (Plano, Texas/Ursuline Academy of Dallas) competed against Navy's Carlee Conway and Catalina Rico, but fell 6-3 as the Midshipmen clinched the doubles point.
Jentz took on Navy's Sabrina Jiang in the matchup at the No. 5 singles position. After Jiang won the first set, 6-4, Jentz responded by winning a tough second set, 7-6, including 7-5 in the tiebreaker. In a super-tiebreaker third set, Jentz came out on top, 10-3, to earn her first win of the spring.
At the No. 2 singles spot, Bode battled Claudia MacKenzie in a three-set match. After falling 6-2 in the first set, Bode bounced back to claim the second set, 6-3. In a deciding super-tiebreaker third set, MacKenzie won 10-7.
Plaszewski also played a three-set match, with hers coming at No. 3 singles against the Midshipmen's Sam Droop. After dropping the first set, 6-3, the junior responded with a 6-2 set win. In the final set, Droop came out on top, 6-2.
At the top singles spot, Panizza dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision against Navy's Amanda Keller, while Gryckiewicz fell 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 against Logan Antill. At No. 6,
Stephanie Miller (Washington, D.C./St. John's College High School) competed against Summer Ralston, but fell 6-3, 6-2.
"I was very pleased with how we improved from our last match," said Head Coach
Rob Castille. "The girls competed really well today and battled with a very solid Navy team. We will definitely need to focus on doubles this week and emphasize getting off to a quick start. With the new format, we can't afford to start off slowly. Overall, I like the improvements and adjustments the girls made and I'm looking forward to our next match."
The Red Flash returns to action on Friday, January 22 at Niagara for a 5 p.m. match. Saint Francis will then take on Buffalo on Saturday in a 1 p.m. contest.
