LORETTO, Pa. – Saint Francis football quarterback
Zack Drayer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey ) and punter
Andrew Zecca (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Gov. Livingston) picked up NEC Player of the Week honors on Monday. Drayer and Zecca helped the Red Flash to a 31-21 win over Central Connecticut State on Saturday as SFU clinched its first ever Northeast Conference Title and FCS Playoffs Bid.
Â
Drayer was named NEC Offensive Player of the Week, while Zecca was the NEC Special Teams Player of the Week. Both players earned their first NEC Player of the Week awards this season.
Â
In his final game at DeGol Field, Drayer threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another. Drayer completed 12 passes for 125 yards.Â
Â
Drayer's first touchdown pass came on a screen pass to
Jordan Millberry (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township), who took it nine yards into the end zone in the first quarter.Â
Â
Later in the first quarter, Drayer connected with
Kamron Lewis (Fresno, Calif./Edison) on a 19-yard score in the right corner of the end zone.Â
Â
The Hershey native snuck in from two yards on a Fourth and Goal play in the second quarter for his sixth rushing touchdown of the year.
Â
Drayer then threw his third touchdown of the day to
Marcus Alston (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph) on a six-yard pass to the back of the end zone in the third quarter.
Â
On the year, Drayer now has a career-high 2,046 yards, just the fifth time an SFU quarterback has gone over 2,000 yards in a season, and 18 touchdowns, the third-most in a season at SFU. Drayer is just three touchdowns away from the single-season record set by Anthony Doria in 2005.Â
Â
Drayer currently has the fifth-most yards in a season at SFU, with Doria holding the record with 2,895 yards in 2005. However, Drayer is just 76 yards away from having the second-most yards in a season at SFU (Kevin Magee, 2,122 yards in 1993).
Â
The senior is now up to 5,483 yards for his career, moving him into third all-time at SFU, passing Magee (5,380 yards, 1991-93). Drayer is 211 yards behind John Kelly (2009-12) for second place. Drayer also has 49 passing touchdowns, 12 behind Anthony Doria (2003-06)'s SFU career record.
Â
Zecca punted eight times for 355 yards on Saturday, averaging 44.4 yards per kick, to help SFU win the field position battle. Five of Zecca's eight punts went for 45 or more yards, with a long of 56.Â
Â
His first punt of the afternoon was a 45-yarder in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Zecca hit a 36-yard punt, which was muffed by CCSU and recovered by
Dashaun Dixon-Roberts (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brasher) at the CCSU 25 to setup an SFU touchdown.
Â
Zecca's last punt of the second quarter was a 48-yarder and his first kick of the third quarter went 47 yards and was also muffed and recovered by
Alex Woicehovich (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) at the CCSU 8 to setup another score.
Â
In the fourth quarter, Zecca boomed a 56-yard punt, the longest of his career, which was downed at the CCSU 29.
Â
Zecca's final punt of the game, a 49-yarder, bounced and rolled out of bounds at the CCSU 3.
Â
He is averaging 42.5 yards on 20 punts this year, with four kicks over 50 yards and placing five inside the 20.
Â
The Red Flash, who clinched its first NEC Regular Season Title and FCS Playoffs Bid in program history, improved to 7-3 overall and 5-0 in the NEC with the win. SFU travels to Wagner this week for a 12 p.m. kickoff at Hameline Field, with a livestream on NEC Front Row.
