Women's Tennis Falls, 6-1, against Bucknell on Saturday

Senior Dani Gryckiewicz
MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Saint Francis women's tennis team fell 6-1 against Bucknell on Saturday at The Club Sport and Health in Monroeville.  The Red Flash won a doubles match and a singles match, but dropped to 1-7 this spring.

At the No. 3 doubles spot, junior Brittini Jentz (Plano, Texas/Ursuline Academy of Dallas) and freshman Stephanie Miller (Washington, D.C./St. John's College High School) combined against Bucknell's Emily Bush and Stephanie Pino.  The Red Flash duo earned a 6-4 win for its second dual match win.

Senior Rafaela Panizza (Jundiai, Brazil) and junior Brittany Plaszewski (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) competed at the top doubles spot against Maria Cioffi and Michele Urbinati.  In a tight set, the SFU pair fell 7-6, including 8-6 in the tiebreaker.

Freshman Raksha Bode (Reunion, Fla./Florida Virtual School) and senior Dani Gryckiewicz (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Academy) matched up against the Bison's Lauren Fishbein and Lisa Jouravleva.  However, Bode and Gryckiewicz dropped a 6-4 result.

"I was really pleased with how we played doubles today," said Head Coach Rob Castille. "This was the best all three teams have played in a match yet this year. It's unfortunate we weren't rewarded with the point, but we can take a lot of positives away from our doubles play."

At the No. 6 singles spot, Gryckiewicz battled Melissa Parks.  The SFU senior won the first set, 6-3.  Gryckiewicz completed the straight-set win with a 6-0 performance in the second set.  She now has three wins this spring.

Panizza competed against Bucknell's Cioffi at the top singles position.  However, Panizza fell 6-3, 6-4.

At the second singles spot, Plaszewski faced Jouravleva.  The SFU junior dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision.

Bode matched up at No. 3 against Bucknell's Fishbein, but fell 6-2, 6-4.

Jentz took on Urbinati at the fourth spot.  However, Jentz dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision.

At No. 5, Miller competed against Papich.  The SFU freshman fell 6-4, 6-1.

"In singles, I wasn't happy with how we competed," said Castille. "Bucknell is a solid team and well coached. I knew we needed to compete at a high level, so I was disappointed that not everyone did. This is something we need to improve upon moving forward."

Saint Francis takes on Temple tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. at the Greensburg Racquet Club.  The Owls are 3-2 this spring.
