Men’s Tennis Earns 5-2 Win Over Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Saint Francis men's tennis team picked up a 5-2 win over Wagner on Saturday in NEC play.  The Red Flash swept the doubles action and won four singles matches.  SFU is now 10-8 overall and 2-0 in conference.  Wagner dropped to 7-11 this season, including 1-3 in the NEC.
 
Sophomore Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and senior Washi Gervais (Longueuil, Quebec/College Stanislas) matched up at the top doubles spot against Eric Poland and Dale Sandy.  The Red Flash duo earned a 6-1 win to improve to 12-6 on the season.
 
At the No. 2 position, junior Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) and freshman Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) competed against the Seahawks' Charlton Boyd and Ilya Kneppelhout.  The SFU pair picked up a 6-3 victory for its 14th win of the spring.
 
The matchup at No. 3 featured SFU juniors Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School) and Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) against Wagner's John Andersson and Allen Wang.  Saint Francis clinched a doubles sweep with Cerdan and Tico's 7-5 win.
 
Gervais competed at the top singles spot against Sandy.  The SFU senior claimed the first set, 6-3.  He completed the sweep with a 6-2 second set win.  Gervais picked up his 12 win this season at No. 1.
 
Lining up at No. 2 was SFU's Foo-Kune against the Seahawks' Kneppelhout.  The Red Flash sophomore took the opening set, 6-1.  He nearly repeated his performance, winning the next set, 6-2.  He is now 9-9 this spring.
 
Avuski matched up at No. 5 against Wang.  The SFU junior won the first set, 6-1.  In a tight second set, Avuski came out on top, 7-5, to complete the straight-set victory.  He now has 11 wins in dual matches.
 
Cerdan met Jeremy Nuss at No. 6.  Cerdan dominated the first set, winning 6-0.  The SFU junior rode his momentum to a 6-0 win in the second set.  He improved to 7-5 this spring.
 
At No. 3, Tico faced Wagner's Eric Poland.  However, Tico fell 6-1, 6-2.
 
Suntar competed at the fourth spot against the Seahawks' Boyd.  After dropping the first set, 7-5, Suntar bounced back to win the second set, 6-1. In the deciding set, Boyd came out on top, 6-2.
 
The Red Flash concludes its regular season on Saturday.  SFU meets NEC foe St. Francis Brooklyn at 10 a.m. and Hofstra at 2 p.m.
