Men’s Tennis Finishes Regular Season with Sweep over St. Francis Brooklyn, Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Saint Francis men's tennis team earned a sweep in its doubleheader on Saturday, closing out the regular season with a 7-0 win over St. Francis Brooklyn and a 5-2 victory over Hofstra.  The Red Flash swept the singles and doubles action in the first match and won five singles matches in the second match.  SFU finished the regular season with a 12-8 record, including 3-0 in NEC play. 
 
Sophomore Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and senior Washi Gervais (Longueuil, Quebec/College Stanislas) competed at the top doubles spot.  They defeated St. Francis Brooklyn's Zurab Tskhakaia and Milos Vukicevic, 6-0, in the first match.  The Red Flash duo knocked off Hofstra's Gustav Akesson and Niko Vulinovich, 6-2, in the second match.  Foo-Kune and Gervais are now 14-6 this spring at No. 1.
 
At No. 2, junior Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) and freshman Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) split two matches.  The SFU pair earned a 6-3 win over the Terriers' Martin Bedecarratz and Sacha Singh, but fell 7-5 against Hofstra's Yahn Gawrit and Marcus Smith.  Avuski and Suntar concluded the regular season with a 15-5 mark.
 
The Red Flash split the decisions at No. 3, winning the match against St. Francis Brooklyn due to no player available, but lost the match to Hofstra, due to no player available.
 
Gervais competed at the No. 1 singles position.  The SFU senior picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory against St. Francis Brooklyn's Bedecarratz.  Gervais repeated his performance in the second match, defeating Hofstra's Smith, 6-2, 6-2.  Gervais is now 14-6 this spring.
 
Lining up at No. 2 was Foo-Kune.  The Red Flash junior cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over SFBK's Tskhakaia, before knocking off HU's Vulinovich, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.  Foo-Kune improved to 11-9 in dual matches.
 
At No. 3, Suntar matched up against the Terriers' Singh and the Pride's Gawrit.  The SFU rookie won the first set, 6-0, 2-0, with Singh retiring in the second set.  Later in the day, Suntar defeated Gawrit, 7-5, 6-1, to finish the spring with 11 wins.
 
In the No. 4 spot, Avuski faced St. Francis Brooklyn's Vukicevic and Hofstra's Akesson.  The SFU junior claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the first match and followed that with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the second match.  Avuski finished the spring with 13 wins.
 
Junior Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School) competed at No. 5 against SFBK's Michael Sparacino and HU's Leonardo Pires. The Red Flash junior was a 6-0, 6-0 winner in the first match.  In the second match, he came out on top, 6-4, 6-2.  He wrapped up the spring with nine wins.
 
The Red Flash competes in the NEC Championships this week.  The tournament begins on Friday at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J.
