Tennis Begins NEC Championships Friday

LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's and women's tennis teams, led by Head Coach Rob Castille, begin their quest for an NEC title on Friday at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J. 
 
The Red Flash men's team finished the regular season with a 12-8 overall mark, including 3-0 in conference play.  SFU, the third seed in the bracket, will take on Mount St. Mary's, the sixth seed, on Friday at 9 a.m.  The winner will continue to Saturday, where it will face the winner of the Fairleigh Dickinson/St. Francis Brooklyn match.
 
Senior Washi Gervais (Longueuil, Quebec/College Stanislas) earned his second NEC Player of the Week award after his performance last weekend in wins over Wagner, St. Francis Brooklyn and Hofstra.  Gervais went 3-0 in singles and combined with sophomore Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) to go 3-0 in doubles. 
 
Gervais leads the NEC with a 14-6 mark at the top singles spot this year.  He has a 3-0 record against conference opponents.  Junior Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) has 13 wins this spring, while Foo-Kune and freshman Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) each have 11 victories. 
 
In doubles, Foo-Kune and Gervais have paired up for a 14-6 record at No. 1.  Avuski and Suntar are 15-5, while splitting time between No. 2 and 3.
 
SFU defeated Mount St. Mary's, 7-0, earlier this season.  The Mount is 11-9 overall and went 1-1 in conference play.  They finished the year winning three of their last four matches.  Louis Tonon leads the team with 14 wins this spring, while Austin Blake and Mateo DeSomocurcio have 10 each.  Blake and DeSomocurcio have combined for a 15-4 mark at the top doubles position.
 
The Red Flash women's team completed the regular season with a 6-14 record, but went 3-0 in the NEC.  SFU is seeded fourth in the tournament and is set to meet LIU Brooklyn on Friday at 2 p.m.  The winner will advance to face the winner of the Bryant/St. Francis Brooklyn match.
 
Saint Francis went 2-1 last weekend, with wins over Wagner and St. Francis Brooklyn and a loss against Hofstra.  Raksha Bode (Reunion, Fla./Florida Virtual School) earned NEC Rookie of the Week honors after going 2-1 in singles and 3-0 in doubles.
 
Senior Dani Gryckiewicz (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Academy) leads the squad with nine wins this spring.  Bode and junior Brittany Plaszewski (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) have eight wins each. 
 
In doubles, senior Rafaela Panizza (Jundiai, Brazil) and Plaszewski have combined for eight doubles wins, all at No. 1.  Bode and Gryckiewicz have seven wins, with six coming at No. 2, while junior Brittini Jentz (Plano, Texas/Ursuline Academy of Dallas) and freshman Stephanie Miller (Washington, D.C./St. John's College High School) have seven victories, with six at No. 3.
