WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Saint Francis men's tennis team, the third seed, fell 4-0 to Bryant, the top seed, on Sunday in the Northeast Conference Championship match. The Red Flash reached its first NEC Championship in program history after defeating Mount St. Mary's and Fairleigh Dickinson. SFU won a doubles match on Sunday and led in two singles matches when Bryant clinched the match point. Saint Francis finishes the season with a 14-9 record.
At the top doubles spot, sophomore
Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and senior
Washi Gervais (Longueuil, Quebec/College Stanislas) took on Nick Lamart and Michael Plutt. The Red Flash duo earned a 6-4 victory to finish with a 16-6 record on the year.
Junior
Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) and freshman
Robin van der Heijden (Burgh Haamstede, Netherlands/Scheldmond College) lined up at No. 2 against Bryant's Luke Lorenz and Max Vogt. The SFU pair dropped a 6-4 decision.
At No. 3, junior
Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) and freshman
Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) competed against Josh Kliger and Jorge Ortiz-Garcia. However, Avuski and Suntar fell 6-1. They finished the season with a 16-7 mark.
Gervais took on Bryant's Vogt at the top singles spot. Gervais claimed the first set, 6-4. The SFU senior was trailing 4-3 in the second set when the match was stopped.
In the second position, Foo-Kune faced Oliver Welsh. The Red Flash sophomore took the first set, 6-4. Foo-Kune was tied 5-5 in the second set when it was halted.
Tico met the Bulldogs' Lorenz at No. 3. However, the SFU junior dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision.
At No. 4, Suntar competed against Bryant's Plutt. The Red Flash rookie fell 6-4, 6-3, ending his freshman season with 13 wins.
Avuski battled Artur Jakubowski at No. 5. After dropping the opening set, 6-2, Avuski was ahead, 6-5, in the second set when the match was stopped.
The freshman, van der Heijden, met Ortiz-Garcia at the sixth spot. However, van der Heijden fell 6-1, 6-3.
"We are definitely disappointed we could not win today and bring home the first tennis championship to SFU," said Head Coach
Rob Castille. "The guys competed hard but some of them just did not have their best today. I know we will use this as a motivation for next year and learn from this experience so we can come back stronger and better."
"Bryant has set the standard for this conference the past three years, so we saw first-hand what it takes to be a championship-level team and we'll work hard to take that next step. We want to congratulate Bryant on winning their third straight title and wish them luck in the NCAA Tournament. I know they will represent the NEC conference well."
