EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Saint Francis men's tennis team earned a 7-0 win against Mount St. Mary's on Sunday to begin NEC play. The Red Flash won the doubles point and swept the singles action. SFU improved to 9-6 on the season, while Mount St. Mary's dropped to 8-8.
At the No. 2 doubles spot, junior
Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) and freshman
Robin van der Heijden (Burgh Haamstede, Netherlands/Scheldmond College) competed against Louis Tonon and Brandon Wortkotter. The Red Flash duo earned a 6-4 victory to clinch the doubles point.
Junior
Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) and freshman
Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) paired up at No. 3 against the Mount's Peter Landis and Darren Mast. The SFU pair picked up a 6-3 win to improve to 12-3 on the year.
Sophomore
Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and senior
Washi Gervais (Longueuil, Quebec/College Stanislas) matched up at the top doubles spot against Austin Blake and Mateo DeSomocurcio. However, Foo-Kune and Gervais dropped a 6-4 decision.
At the top singles spot, Gervais battled Blake. The SFU senior fell 6-3 in the first set, but responded with a 7-6 win in a tight set, including a 7-4 tiebreaker. In the deciding super-tiebreaker set, Gervais came out on top, 10-5. He is now 11-4 on the season.
In the matchup at No. 2, Foo-Kune took on DeSomocurcio. The Red Flash sophomore claimed the first set, 6-2. In a tight second set, he won 7-5 to clinch the straight-set victory. Foo-Kune improved to 8-7 this spring.
Tico lined up at No. 3 against Mount St. Mary's Tonon. The Saint Francis junior took the first set, 7-5, but Tonon won the next set, 6-1. In the final set, a super-tiebreaker set, Tico battled for an 11-9 win for his fourth singles win of the spring.
At No. 4, Suntar competed against Mast. The SFU rookie won the first set, 6-4. He clinched a sweep by repeating his performance in the second set, winning 6-4. Suntar also improved to 8-7 in dual matches.
Avuski matched up at the fifth singles position against the Mount's Wortkotter. The Red Flash junior claimed the opening set, 6-3. He earned a straight-set victory with a 6-2 second set to move to 9-4 on the year.
At the sixth singles spot, van der Heijden faced MSM's Landis. The Red Flash freshman took the first set, 6-1. In a tight second set, van der Heijden won 7-5 to clinch a two-set victory. He picked up his fifth win of the spring.
The Red Flash returns to non-conference play next weekend. SFU travels to Wright State for a 3 p.m. match on Friday and visits Dayton for a 1 p.m. match on Saturday.
