ATHENS, Ohio. – The Saint Francis field hockey team defeated Missouri State Bears, 4-1, on Monday at Pruitt Field.
Saint Francis moves to 2-1 on the season, while Missouri State drops to 0-2.
Kelli Connolly (Laurel Springs, N.J./Camden Catholic) scored her first collegiate goal by tipping in a reverse chip from
Shannon Pereira (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Francis Libermann Catholic) in the 20th minute.
Connolly gave Saint Francis a 2-0 lead just a minute later as she converted a feed from
Celeste Azzari (Woolwich Twp., N.J./Kingsway Regional). SFU would maintain their 2-0 lead heading into the half.
Missouri State would cut the Saint Francis led to one, as the Bears' Liz Young scored off a MSU penalty corner. Pereira answered after she beat Feli Heinzel between the legs to give the Flash a 3-1 advantage. With six minutes left, a scramble in the circle lead to a
Kyra Castano (Laflin, Pa./James M. Coughlin) goal to clinch the Saint Francis victory.
The Red Flash dominated play, outshooting the Bears, 13-2. Saint Francis also held a slight 6-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Elizabeth Dyer (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) earned the victory for Saint Francis in goal with one save.
Saint Francis will start a five-game homestand on Friday as they welcome Towson for a 3 p.m. matchup.
