LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis field hockey team earned a 2-1 victory in overtime against Georgetown on Saturday afternoon.
Hannah Retherford (Benton, Pa./Benton) notched the game-winner for the Flash just over five minutes into overtime.
Saint Francis (5-1) dominated much of the play throughout the day, outshooting the Hoyas, 23-9. SFU also had 13 penalty corners to Georgetown's six. Through all that, though, the match remained scoreless.
That changed in the 59th minute.
Kelli Connolly (Laurel Springs, N.J./Camden Catholic) used a feed from
Brianna Govia (St. James, Trinidad/Holy Name) to beat Georgetown goalie Rachel Skonecki. The goal is Connolly's third of her freshman season.
SFU outshot Georgetown, 11-2, in the second half, and it took a good individual play from Georgetown's Aliyah Graves-Brown to break through the tough Red Flash defense. She carried through the SFU defense and scored with just more than two minutes left in the second half to tie the score at 1-1.
Govia had a great chance early in overtime. She beat Skonecki but had her shot stopped by defender Molly Thompson.
Brea Seabrook (Wilkes Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) followed a minute later with a shot that was turned away. Georgetown came back with three penalty corners and three shots in the next few minutes, but
Elizabeth Dyer (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) managed to turn away the two shots on goal. She finished with five saves.
Saint Francis earned the victory when Govia went down the right side and found Retherford in front. She corralled the pass and fired past Skonecki for the overtime winner. The goal is Retherford's second of the season.
Govia led all players with six shots, all on goal. Connolly and Seabrook each had two shots on goal. Saint Francis had 16 shots on goal.
