LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis women's tennis team plays its second weekend of the Spring season with matches against Howard and Navy this weekend. The Red Flash meets the Bison on Saturday for a Noon match and the Midshipmen on Sunday for an 8 a.m. battle.
The Red Flash, led by Head Coach
Rob Castille, is looking for its first win of the 2017 season after falling 6-1 against Northern Kentucky and Wright State last weekend.
Sophomores
Raksha Bode (Reunion, Fla./Florida Virtual School) and
Stephanie Miller (Washington, D.C./St. John's College High School) each earned a singles win on opening weekend. Bode played at No. 3, picking up a 6-3, 6-3 win against Wright State's Vanessa Madrigal. Miller claimed a 4-6, 6-2, 13-11 win at No. 4 against Northern Kentucky's Danielle Donahue. Bode is 5-6 overall, while Miller is 6-5.
Freshmen
Laura Gutierrez (Bogota, Colombia/Cibercolegio UCN) and
Lucia Seigford (Madrid, Spain/Mirasur) each have five overall wins. Gutierrez competed at No. 1 this past weekend, with Seigford competing at No. 2. Freshman
Kathryn Dunleavy (Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy) lined up at the No. 5 position and has four wins this year.
In doubles, Bode and Miller combined for a win at No. 2 against Northern Kentucky's Katja Dijanezevic and Xasmine Xantos. The Red Flash duo earned a 6-1 win. Gutierrez and Seigford paired up at No. 1 in both matches this past weekend.
Howard will make its season debut this weekend. The Bison were 10-7 last season. Saint Francis fell 4-2 in last year's match.
Navy fell 7-0 in its season debut last weekend at Penn State. The Midshipmen will battle St. Bonaventure and Mount St. Mary's on Saturday before taking on the Red Flash on Sunday. Navy was 20-10 last season and reached the Patriot League Championship match. SFU dropped a 6-1 decision at Navy last year.
