LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's volleyball team opens its 2017 season on Friday at the California Baptist University Invitational in Riverside, Calif. The Red Flash will play three matches over two days. On Friday, SFU will play Concordia University at 1 p.m. and Cal Baptist at 10 p.m. On Saturday, Saint Francis faces Lindenwood at noon. All matches are set for Eastern Standard Time.
Saint Francis finished last season with a 19-10 overall record and was 9-5 in conference play. SFU ended the 2016 campaign knocking off five national-ranked opponents, including two matches against Penn State. The Red Flash return four players that recorded over 100 kills, including All-EIVA honorees
Jeff Hogan (Northern Cambria, Pa./Northern Cambria) and
Stephen Braswell (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern). Hogan and Braswell finished last season with 371 and 346 kills, respectively.
Daniel Ford (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North), who earned All-EIVA honors last season, returns as the team's setter. Ford earned 22 starts in the team's 29 matches last season. The senior finished with 915 assists to lead the Red Flash and averaged 10.05 assists per set last year.
Brandon Buck (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) and
Keith Kegerreis (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) also return to pace Saint Francis' offense. Buck ranked fourth for the Flash with 166 kills and was third on the team with 20 service aces. The junior also added 38 total blocks. Kegerreis finished last season with 123 kills and was second on the squad with 80 total blocks.
Gabe Woffindin (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) returns after finishing off a stellar freshman campaign as the team's libero. Woffindin led the Flash with 249 digs while adding 2.39 digs per set.
The Red Flash was picked third in this year's EIVA Preseason Coaches' Poll, taking home 49 points.
