LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis Football team finishes the 2017 season at Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. Kickoff against the Colonels is set for 1 p.m. at Roy Kidd Stadium. The game will be broadcast on the OVC Digital Network.
Head Coach Mark Elder is in his second year leading the Colonels, with a 6-14 record. Eastern Kentucky is 3-7 this season, including 3-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
The Colonels fell 31-24 against Austin Peay, as the Governors scored the go-ahead touchdown with 53 seconds remaining. EKU had 317 total yards, including 222 passing and 95 rushing. Quarterback Tim Boyle completed 22-of-36 passes for 213 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Ryan Markush caught nine passes for 69 yards and two scores, while Neiko Creamer had four catches for 54 yards. Daryl McCleskey rushed for 55 yards on 13 carries. Lucas Williams hit all three of his field goal attempts.
EKU allowed 443 yards, including 203 through the air and 240 on the ground. The Colonels had three sacks and a fumble recovery. Linebacker Jeffrey Canady led EKU with 10 tackles, while cornerback Jordan Whitfield had nine stops and a forced fumble, which was returned 37 yards by nickelback Ben Bascom. Defensive end Luder Jean-Louis recorded eight tackles and three sacks.
Eastern Kentucky averages 21.4 points per game, ranking 83rd in the FCS, and 329.8 total yards per game, ranking 85th in the nation. EKU averages 226.9 passing and 102.9 rushing yards per game, ranking 40th and 100th in the FCS, respectively.
Senior quarterback Tim Boyle, a UConn transfer, leads the EKU offense. Boyle has completed 61 percent of his passes for 2,068 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He has one rushing touchdown.
Sophomore Daryl McCleskey Jr. leads a talented backfield for the Colonels. The five-foot-nine, 186-pound McCleskey has 519 yards and three touchdowns, while averaging 5.2 yards per carry. He has caught 16 passes for 143 yards and a score. Six-foot, 222-pound junior LJ Scott has rushed for 253 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 3.2 yards per carry. The Louisville transfer has 14 catches for 108 yards. Arizona State transfer Jason Lewis, a sophomore, has 154 yards and two scores on 45 carries.
Leading the receiving corps is six-foot-two senior Ryan Markush. The senior has 52 catches for 723 yards and nine touchdowns. He ranks 15th in the FCS in touchdown catches. Junior Neiko Creamer, six-foot-three, has 38 catches for 478 yards, while 5-foot-10 freshman BK Smith has 21 receptions for 219 yards. Tight end Dan Paul has 38 receptions for 364 yards and a score.
The EKU offensive line features a senior, a junior, two sophomores and a freshman. The projected starters have combined for 45 career starts. Senior right guard Chance Edwards leads the group with 24 career starts, including nine games this season. Junior Justin Myles has started all 10 games this season at right tackle. Sophomore Thomas Tabur has five starts at left guard, while sophomore Ja'HShaun Seider has made four starts at left tackle. Freshman center Jackson Bardall has two starts this season. Sophomore De'Jour Simpson, six starts, and freshman Nick Cavinee, three starts, also see time on the line.
Eastern Kentucky uses a 4-3 defensive scheme. The Colonels allow 28.2 points and 352.8 yards per game, ranking 82nd and 48th in the nation, respectively. EKU ranks 39th in the FCS in pass defense, giving up 198.3 yards, and 65th in rush defense, allowing 154.5 yards per contest. EKU has recorded 22 sacks and forced 16 turnovers (12 fumbles).
Senior defensive end Luder Jean Louis is enjoying a breakout 2017 campaign. He has registered 49 tackles, 24 solo, with 15 for loss and 10 sacks. He also has a forced fumble and nine QB hurries. Jean Louis ranks 13th in the FCS in tackles for loss and sixth in sacks. Fellow end Taquan Evans has 21 tackles, 11 solo, five tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Sophomore tackle Connor Foos has made 25 stops, 3.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and a fumble recovery. At the opposite tackle spot is freshman Dillon Denault who has 14 tackles, with 3.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks. Freshman Leonard Humphrey also sees playing time on the line with 15 tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack.
Preseason All-America selection Jeffrey Canady leads the linebacker group. He tops the team with 74 tackles, 38 solo, 5.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Junior Gavin Bryant has recorded 38 tackles, 20 solo, a tackle for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, while junior Corey Glass has made 37 stops, 21 solo, a sack, two forced fumbles and a pick.
Senior safety Kobie Grace leads the secondary. He has 70 tackles, 42 solo and 6.5 for loss on the year to go with three forced fumbles, an FCS-best four fumble recoveries, six pass breakups and an interception. At the opposite safety position, sophomore TJ Comstock and senior Eric Reed share time. Comstock has 15 tackles, with 1.5 for loss, while Reed has 42 stops, 25 solo, one for loss, an interception and a fumble recovery. Junior cornerback Jordan Whitfield has 38 tackles, 32 solo, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble, while senior corner Buck Solomon has 36 stops, a fumble recovery and five pass breakups. At nickelback is sophomore Ben Bascom, who has 35 tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, an interception and a team-best eight pass breakups. Omari Alexander also sees time at cornerback with six tackles this season.
Senior Lucas Williams has converted 11 of his 15 field goal attempts, with a long of 51, and 21-of-24 extra point attempts. Preseason All-America punter Keith Wrzuszczak is averaging 43.9 yards per punt, sixth best in the FCS, with nine punts longer than 50 yards, a long of 84 (second longest punt in the FCS this season), and placing 19 inside the 20. LJ Scott ranks fourth in the FCS with a 30-yard kick return average, while Daryl McCleskey is averaging 31.2 yards per return. Ryan Markush handles punt return duties, averaging 4.7 yards per return.
This will be Saint Francis' first meeting against Eastern Kentucky and its first time playing a current Ohio Valley Conference member. It's also SFU's first time ending the regular season against a non-conference opponent since 2007 against LaSalle.
