Softball Opens NEC Play With Sweep Over FDU

TEANECK, N.J. – The Saint Francis softball team opened conference play with a sweep over Fairleigh Dickinson on Monday.  The Red Flash earned a mercy-rule win in the first game, with a 15-0 victory in five innings.  Saint Francis won the second game, 10-1.  SFU improved to 27-8 overall and extended its win streak to 15 games.  FDU fell to 1-16 overall.
 
Junior Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) drew three walks on the day, giving her 89 for her career and breaking a tie to move her into first place all-time at SFU, passing Jamie Krusinsky (86, 1999-02).
 
With six RBI on the day, junior Madison Cabell (Ivor, Va./Southampton) now has 113 for her career, moving into third place all-time at Saint Francis.  She is just one RBI behind Autumn Helsel (1996-99).
 
With her win in game one, senior Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) now has 45 for her career, tying her for first all-time at SFU with Laura Caldwell (2006-09).
 
The Red Flash makes its home debut on Wednesday as it hosts Pitt for a 4 p.m. contest at Red Flash Softball Field.  The Panthers are 17-16 this season. 
 
First Game
 
The Red Flash did not allow a hit through the first 3.2 innings.  DeVries improved to 7-4 this season after throwing three hitless innings.  DeVries struck out five batters and allowed her only baserunner on a walk.  Mikayla Bower (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) replaced DeVries in the fourth inning and closed out the game with two scoreless innings.  Bower allowed two hits and struck out a batter.
 
Freshman Irene Herrera started in the circle for the Knights.  In two innings, Herrera allowed 10 runs, seven earned, on four hits and four walks.  She stuck out three batters.  Madison Emerson pitched the final three innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits, while striking out two and walking two.
 
Cabell led the Red Flash, going four-for-four with three singles and a triple.  Cabell drove in a season-high five runs.  Senior Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) hit a three-run homer and sophomore Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) added a two-run shot while scoring three times.  Sophomore Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) had two hits, including a double, two runs and three RBI.  Sophomore Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) and Seneca each scored two runs.
 
Sophomores Kellie Natham and Serena Meehan each had a hit for FDU.
 
Saint Francis jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.  After Seneca was hit by a pitch, Norton reached on an error by the pitcher.  A double steal put runners on second and third for S. McKee, who smashed a double to the right center gap to drive in two runs.  Cabell followed with a triple to the wall in right to allow McKee to cross the plate.  Cabell came in to score on a groundout to second by Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry).
 
The Red Flash added three runs in the top of the second.  C. McKee reached after being hit by a pitch, with Seneca drawing a walk in the next at-bat.  A double steal moved to runners to second and third before a walk drawn by Norton loaded the bases.  A wild pitch allowed McKee to cross the plate.  Cabell then lined a single to right to drive in Seneca and Norton to give SFU a 7-0 advantage.
 
Saint Francis drove in six runs in the top of the third.  Troxell led off the inning with a walk and reached second after an error on a fielder's choice grounder by Kelsie Marconi (Lowber, Pa./Yough).  Witthus then launched a fly ball off the scoreboard in left for a three-run homer.  C. McKee reached on an error before a walk drawn by Norton set up two runners for S. McKee.  McKee then drove a single through the left side to plate her sister.  Cabell followed with a single up the middle to drive in two more runs, with S. McKee and pinch-runner Meg Murzello (Maple Shade, N.J./Holy Cross) scoring.  SFU led 13-0 after Cabell's single.
 
The Red flash plated two more runs in the top of the fourth on a homer by C. McKee.  The inning began with Marconi drawing a walk.  Two batters later, McKee blasted a fly ball over the fence in left field.  McKee's fifth homer of the season gave SFU a 15-0 lead.
 
Second Game
 
Freshman Abby Trahan (Kaplan, La./Kaplan) earned her 11th win of the year and moved to 11-3 with a five-inning effort on Monday.  Trahan allowed one run, a leadoff home run in the first inning, but allowed just two baserunners after that, with a walk and a hit batter.  The rookie struck out six batters.  Senior Ethel Santai (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) entered to start the sixth inning and finished the final two innings, allowing three hits and striking out two batters without allowing a run.
 
Sophomore Baylee Ports started game two for the Knights.  She pitched 2.2 innings, allowing seven runs, all earned, on six hits, while walking three.  Emerson replaced Ports and threw 1.1 innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits, two walks and striking out one.  Herrera entered the game in the top of the fifth and threw three innings, giving up two runs on two hits and walking four batters.
 
Freshman Taylor Hoover (Phillipsburg, Ohio/Northmont) went three-for-three, including her first career home run, with two runs and two RBI.  Norton had two hits, with a homer, and two RBI, while Troxell hit a solo homer.  C. McKee drove in two runs, while Cabell and Witthus each drove in one.
 
Fairleigh Dickinson's offense was led by sophomore Reanna Cervantes, who had a double and a homer.  Junior Kassidy Neptune added a double.
 
The Knights got on the board first in game two.  Cervantes led off the bottom of the first with a homer to center to take a 1-0 lead.
 
The Red Flash answered with three runs in the top of the second.  After singles by S. McKee and Hoover, Troxell and Marion reached on fielder's choices, which Marion's ending with the bases loaded.  Witthus then battled to draw a walk and score Hoover.  C. McKee then blooped a single to left to allow Troxell and Marion to cross the plate and give SFU a 3-1 advantage.
 
Saint Francis added four runs in the top of the third, including two homers.  After a walk by Seneca, S. McKee reached on a fielder's choice.  McKee stole second with Cabell at the plate.  Cabell then lined a single to right to bring home McKee.  Hoover followed by launching her first career home run over the left field wall.  The Red Flash went back-to-back with Troxell blasting one over the fence in left to extend the lead to 7-1.
 
The Red Flash tacked on a run in the top of the fourth.  C. McKee drew a one-out walk and, two batters later, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher.  McKee crossed the plate on Norton's single to center to extend SFU's lead to 8-1.
 
Saint Francis extended its lead to 10-1 in the top of the seventh.  Witthus drew a walk to start the inning, moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a fly out to right by C. McKee.  Seneca then hit a sac fly into left, which was caught by the shortstop, allowing Witthus to score.  Norton followed by blasting her eighth homer of the year, this one a solo shot over the center field wall.
