Athens, Greece - Former Saint Francis guard
Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) has signed a professional basketball contract to play with Peristeri GS Athens of the Greek Basket League A2 Division.
"I am extremely happy to be a part of such a historical organization," said Angelou. I will work hard and do whatever is asked of me to help this organization achieve its goals. I would like to thank chairman Philippos Kotsi and general manager Giorgos Pantazopoylo for their confidence in me. I would also like to thank my coaches and teammates at Saint Francis, who helped me become a better basketball player and person. I would not be here today without them."
Peristeri GS Athens won the B League South Division title with a 26-4 record last season to earn a promotion to the A2 League for the upcoming season.
Angelou, who is from Halkida, Greece, helped Chalikda G.S. win a Division III Championship in 2011-12 before coming to Loretto. He was selected to play for Filathlitikos in Athens in 2012-13, averaging 16 points and six assists while shooting 57% from the floor and 43% from 3-point range for the U-18 team, where he was teammates with current Milwaukee Buck Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Angelou represented Greece at the U-18 European Championships in Lithuania five years ago, playing in all eight games and averaging 3.6 points per contest. Greece went 3-5 in the tournament.
"I am really happy for Georgios and his family," said Saint Francis coach
Rob Krimmel. "This is a great opportunity for him to continue his career in basketball as a professional. He made a huge impact on our program and our University during his time at Saint Francis and I know he will do the same for his new team. They are getting one of the most hardworking, passionate people that I have ever been around."
Angelou leaves Saint Francis with the fifth highest 3PT FG% in school history (40.2%). He enjoyed his finest season as a senior in 2016-17, averaging 8.0 points per game and leading the team with 68 three-pointers. He becomes the second Saint Francis player to play for Peristeri GS Athens, joining former Red Flash All-American and Dallas Maverick Mike Iuzzolino, who played for the club from 2001-02.
The club plays its home games in the Andreas Papandrou, a 4,000 seat arena.
