MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Saint Francis Men's Tennis team came up short in a tough 4-3 loss against Wright State on Sunday at The Club Sport and Health in Monroeville. After dropping the doubles point, the Red Flash responded with three singles wins, but the Raiders earned a win in the final singles match to clinch the victory. SFU is now 0-3 this season, while Wright State picked up its first win of the year.
"I felt our guys fought well and we put ourselves in position to win the match," said Head Coach
Rob Castille. "It's unfortunate we were not able to do so but with each match, the young guys are gaining experience and improving. We saw some good things today that we had focused on this past week in practice so I was pleased to see that implemented in the match."

At the top doubles spot, senior
Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and freshman
Charles Morkel (Cape Town, South Africa/Paul Roos Gymnasium) competed against Wright State's Michal Kianicka and Fernando Nardelli. The Red Flash duo fell 6-2.

In the match at No. 2, sophomore
Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) and freshman
Sebastian Pinos (Quito, Ecuador/Compuinformatica) took on the Raiders' Javier Alvarez de la Villa and Marcel Ueltzhoeffer. However, the SFU pair dropped a 6-3 decision.

Junior
Chad Allender (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) and sophomore
Samuel Miller (Smithfield, R.I./Homeschool) battled WSU's Carlos Estrada and Param Pun. The SFU duo suffered a 6-1 setback.

At no. 6 singles, Allender matched up against the Raiders' Estrada, but dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision. That point gave Wright State a 2-0 advantage.

However, the Red Flash got on the board with Luna's win at No. 1 against Wright State's Kianicka. The SFU junior claimed the opening set, 6-2. Luna repeated his performance for a 6-2 win in the second set. Luna improved to 5-5 overall.

Saint Francis tied the match at 2-2 with Foo-Kune's victory at No. 2. In his first set against WSU's Nardelli, the senior won 6-1. He clinched a straight-set victory with a 6-2 second set to move to 5-6 overall.

Pinos took on the Raiders' Alvarez de la Villa at No. 4 singles. The Red Flash rookie claimed the first set, 6-4. He earned the sweep with a 6-3 victory in the next set. Pinos improved to 5-5 overall and gave SFU a 3-2 advantage in the match.

Miller competed against WSU's Ueltzhoeffer in the match at No. 5. After dropping the first set, 6-1, Miller responded with a 6-4 win in the second set. In the deciding set, Ueltzhoeffer came out on top, 6-4, to tie the overall match score at 3-3.

The final match to finish was at No. 3, where Morkel met WSU's Pun. The SFU rookie took the first set, 6-4, but Pun won a tough second set, 7-5. In the final set, Morkel fell 6-2 as WSU clinched the match point.

The Red Flash is back on the road next Sunday, February 4, when it visits Lehigh for a 10 a.m. match.
