MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Saint Francis Women's Tennis team fell 4-3 against Carnegie Mellon on Saturday at The Club Sport and Health in Monroeville. The Red Flash dropped the doubles point, but earned three singles wins to tie the match at 3-3, but CMU won the final singles match to clinch the win. SFU is now 0-5 this season, while the Tartans, ranked 10th in the ITA Division III poll, improved to 6-1.
Junior
Raksha Bode (Reunion, Fla./Florida Virtual School) and sophomore
Lucia Seigford (Madrid, Spain/Mirasur) took on CMU's Katie Lai and Courtney Ollis at No. 2. The Red Flash duo claimed a 6-2 win and improved to 2-1 in dual matches.
At the top doubles spot, sophomore
Laura Gutierrez (Bogota, Colombia/Cibercolegio UCN) and freshman
Nastasia Tamarkin (Washington, D.C./School Without Walls) met Carnegie Mellon's Vinaya Rao and Melissa Strome. The SFU pair fell 7-5 to move to 1-3 this Spring.
Carnegie Mellon won the match at No. 3 by default due to no SFU player available.
In the match at No. 1 singles, Seigford faced the Tartans' Jamie Vizelman. In a tough first set, Seigford came out on top, 7-6, with a 8-6 win in the tiebreaker. Seigford dominated the second set, 6-0, to earn a sweep and pick up her second win this Spring.
Bode battled Carnegie Mellon's Lai at No. 3. The SFU junior claimed a tight opening set, 7-5. She clinched a straight-set victory with a 6-3 win in the next set. Bode is now 2-3 in dual matches.
At No. 4, junior
Stephanie Miller (Washington, D.C./St. John's College High School) matched up against CMU's Marina Selenica. The Saint Francis junior took the first set, 6-3. She clinched a two-set victory with a 6-2 win in the next set. Miller moved to 2-3 this Spring. Miller's win tied the overall match score at 3-3.
Gutierrez took on the Tartans' Rao at No. 2. In a tough first set, Gutierrez fell 7-6, with a 7-2 tiebreaker. In a tight second set, Rao came out on top, 7-6.
With the teams tied with three matches points a piece, Tamarkin matched Strome at No. 5. The Red Flash rookie won the first set, 6-3. However, Strome took the second set, 6-2. In the deciding set, Tamarkin fell 6-3. She is now 2-3 in dual matches this season.
The Tartans won the match at No. 6 singles by default due to no SFU player available.
The Red Flash concludes the weekend on Sunday against Dayton. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at The Club Sport and Health.
