Brookville, N.Y. -Â The Saint Francis football team will look to bounce back from a disappointing double overtime loss to Robert Morris with an away game at LIUÂ on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Scouting LIU
Saint Francis can't take the Sharks lightly despite their 0-5 record as their last three losses have all been by 10 points or less. The Sharks played perennial power Duquesne tight two weeks ago, losing 21-14 and fell to Bryant last week 27-22 when its final drive stalled at the Bryant 35. LIU's offense has yet to find its rhythm as the Sharks rank last in the conference in scoring offense at 12.6 ppg and eighth in total offense at 241.2 ypg. Look for the Saint Francis defensive line to get pressure as the Sharks have allowed the most total sack yardage in the league and SFU is tied for the league lead in sacks with 16.
LIU's defense has held its own and been particularly stout against the rush. Linebacker Jerome Brooks III is second in the conference in tackles, averaging 9.2 per contest, while Liam McIntyre and Grant Ibeh are also in the top 10 in tackles. The Sharks defense was dominant vs. Bryant, holding the Bulldogs to just 110 yards passing and 243 total yards of offense in last week's narrow defeat.
Series History
This is the first meeting between the schools.
4th Down Defense
The Red Flash defense is the best in the conference at getting off the field on third down, holding opponents to a measly 23.3% conversion rate. Unfortunately, it hasn't translated to fourth down where opponents are 7-for-12. Saint Francis had Robert Morris in 4
th and 6 and 4
th and 10 on the game-tying drive and allowed conversions on both occasions which sent the game into overtime.
Time of Possession
Saint Francis continues to win the time of possession since the start of conference play as SFU is second in the Northeast Conference in time of possession at 31:44 a game. The Red Flash racked up 34:49 of TOP vs. Robert Morris after accumulating 33:39 at Bryant. SFU had two drives that chewed up over five minutes on the clock including an opening drive that lasted 11 plays and 6:09.
Reliable Ra'Shaun
Redshirt sophomore wide receiver E.J. Jenkins has garnered most of the headlines due to his team-high five touchdowns receptions but it has been redshirt junior
Ra'Shaun Henry (Killeen, Texas /Copperas Cove) who has been quarterback
Jason Brown's (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) favorite target. Henry caught nine passes for a game-high 87 yards in Saturday's loss and ranks third in the conference and first on the team with 5.5 receptions per game. He has had at least four catches in all six games to date.
Looking to Break One
The Saint Francis run game has started to get on track but it is still missing the big play. A week after
Joel Denley (Beaumont, Texas/West Brook) ran for over 100 yards at Bryant, Saint Francis mustered 156 yards on the ground vs. Robert Morris thanks to a career-high 80 yards on 19 carries from freshman
Chris Wells (Philadelphia PA/Neumann-Goretti). Unfortunately, an SFU runner hasn't broken free of the second level. Since the start of the 2018 season, SFU has had only two runs of 30 or more yards, both from
Chris Cropper (Wilmington, Del./St. Frances Academy) who has since moved to the defensive side of the ball. The two longest runs of the season have been 24 yards, one from Denley and the other on a scramble from Brown.
Have a DAY'Jon
Senior
Da'Jon Lee (Falls Church, Va. /Robinson) turned in another terrific performance on Saturday, leading Saint Francis in tackles with nine and tackles for loss with 2.5. He also blocked a field goal in the first overtime period which led to SFU's game-winning 25 yard field goal which sailed wide right. Lee is currently tied for the team-lead with 34 tackles and ranks tied-for-third in the conference with eight tackles for a loss.
Jackson Approaching School Record
Sophomore cornerback
Dorian Jackson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Obama Academy ) recorded a career-high and single-game school record six pass breakups in the win over Robert Morris to move into a tie-for-third in single season program history with 12 through just six games. Jackson is just three shy of the single season school record set by
Jermaine Ponder (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney)Â in 2018. Jackson has played a huge role in SFU's pass defense which ranks 1st in all of FCS in pass defense efficiency, holding opposing quarterbacks to a 46.8% completion percentage.
