Loretto, Pa. – The Saint Francis field hockey team (4-11, 1-4 A-10) was shutout by UMass (7-7, 4-2 A-10) on Sunday, 2-0, at DeGol Field.
The Red Flash offense had trouble navigating the UMass defense all day, only registering five shots and four on goal compared to 18 and nine on goal from the Minutewomen.
UMass struck first halfway through the first quarter to take a 1-0 lead, then scored with six and a half minutes remaining in the second quarter to take the 2-0 lead into halftime.
The second half saw no scoring from either team, giving UMass the 2-0 conference victory.
For the Red Flash, goalkeeper Claudia Marzec (Whitinsville, Mass./Moses Brown School) stopped six shots.
Senior Livvy Webb (Easton, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) led Saint Francis with two shots.
Up next for the Red Flash is a weekend of away matches – a conference battle Friday at Richmond then nonconference action Sunday at James Madison.
