CLEARWATER, FLA- Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) set the Saint Francis all-time hit record with 203 but the Red Flash dropped a pair of heartbreakers in their final at-bats, falling 2-1 in eight innings to Providence and 10-8 to Western Michigan.
Norton went 4-8 in the two games on Saturday, giving her 203 career hits, breaking
Madison Cabell's (Ivor, Va./Southampton) record of 202 set just last season. The senior remains just one home run shy of
Jordan Seneca's (Plum, Pa./Plum) record of 48, also set last season.
GAME ONE VS PROVIDENCE
The ultimate pitchers duel started the Red Flash Saturday as the game went into extra innings scoreless.
Christina Clark (Avon, Ohio/Avon High School) threw seven shutout innings against the Friars. The freshman only ran into trouble when the game went into extra innings and moved into tiebreaker rules which puts a runner on second base to start the inning. Clark allowed just six hits and walked only two in the contest.
The Red Flash had chances to score in the first inning, putting runners on the corners with just one out. Friars' starter Daniela Alvarez escaped trouble all game long and got consecutive outs to keep SFU off the board. Neither team would get a runner past second base over the next few innings. The Red Flash got two on in the fourth, but an attempted double steal saw Norton get called out at third, which ended the threat.
Saint Francis had another opportunity in the sixth when Norton and
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) both singled to put two on with one out. A throwing error off a fielder's choice moved runners to second and third with two out, but a strike out ended the inning as Alvarez again escaped trouble. In the seventh, it was Clark's turn to avoid trouble as Providence had runners on first and second with one out. The righty got a fly out and a fielder's choice ended the frame. The Flash got a single in the seventh but no more, as the game went to extras.
Providence struck twice using a sacrifice, a single and a double to plate a pair of runs. Clark limited the damage to just the two runs on two hits, getting a fly out to end the inning. After the first two batters were retired,
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) singled home
MeKenzie Saban (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) from second to make it a 2-1 game but the Flash couldn't push across the equalizer and dropped the one-run decision.
GAME TWO VS WMU
The second game on Saturday was the polar opposite from the first. The Broncos came back to top the Red Flash 10-8 on a two-out, three run home run in the bottom of the seventh. The loss spoiled a 4-4 with 5 RBI performance from
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) and a three-run game from
MeKenzie Saban (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills).
The Broncos would strike first, scoring a pair in the second inning. WMU got four singles in the frame, with the last one getting through the left side of the infield and plating a pair.
Mikayla Bower (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport), who got the game two start, got out of the inning, getting a ground out to short to end the frame. The lead wouldn't last long, Saban and
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) started the inning with a walk and a single. A Norton fly ball moved them to second and third and
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) brought them home with a single but she was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.
The back-and-forth affair went back toward SFU in the fifth. Norton continued her hot hitting with a single that plated Saban.
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) followed with a two-run single, scoring twin sister Cheyenne and Norton as SFU took a 5-2 lead. Western Michigan cut into the lead in their half of the fifth, using a single, walk and error to score twice and shave the SFU lead to 5-4.
Saint Francis would again stretch the lead back out to three, scoring twice more in the sixth all with two out. Saban got the rally going with a walk and a
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) single and a WMU error gave
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) her fourth and fifth RBI of the game with another single to left. The Broncos would sieze the momentum in the bottom of the inning, erasing the deficit with a three-run inning of their own. Western Michigan used a hit batter, an error and two singles to plate a pair of runs and load the bases. After the Red Flash went back to
Christina Clark (Avon, Ohio/Avon High School), this time in relief, the freshman got a force out at the plate before a two-run single tied the game.
Jordan Frank (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Central Catholic) started the seventh with a single and
Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) moved her to second on a sacrifice.
Brianna Walker (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) picked a great time for her second hit of the day, singling home Frank to push SFU ahead 8-7.
Halle Marion (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) followed with another single to push Walker into scoring position but a fielder's choice and groundout ending the threat.
Western Michigan looked to copy the Red Flash, getting a walk and sacrifice to move a runner into scoring position. A ground out and an error put runners on the corners for the Broncos for Sydney Stefanick. Stefanick, who got the start for WMU sent a ball over the center field wall for a heartbreaking, walk-off, three run homer.
The losses drop Saint Francis to 8-14 overall on the year. They will close out their Spring Break trip and their time in Florida tomorrow against Army West Point. First pitch between the Red Flash and Black Knights is set for 11:15 tomorrow morning.
