Game Recap: Softball | | Dan Griffin

Red Flash Weather Storm, Seahawks

LORETTO, PA- Saint Francis waited out a three-hour rain delay in game one on Sunday and swept the Wagner Seahawks, 6-4 and 8-4 on a soggy, windy Sunday at the Red Flash Softball Complex.

Mikayla Bower (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) delivered the big blow in game one, a three-run home run to straight away center field and Jordan Frank (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Central Catholic) went 3-4 with a homer and four RBI in game two, to give Bower the game two win.

GAME ONE RECAP
The teams agreed on Sunday morning to move the start time up 30 minutes to 11:30 and the game got underway under cloudy, windy, but dry conditions. Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) got the Red Flash on the board early with a solo home run to left center field in the bottom of the first. Wagner answered back in the third, scoring two runs off two walks and two run scoring base hits, a single by Hannah Lewis and a double from Natalie Del Ponte. The lead did not last long as the Red Flash hung a five-spot on the scoreboard in their half of the inning. Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) singled home a pair of runs, giving her 200 career RBI, and Bower brought three in on her blast to center. The rain started picking up in the fourth, and after two walks started the bottom of the fourth, the umpires called for a rain delay. The delay lasted close to three hours, finally resuming play around 4:15. After quiet fourth and fifth innings, Wagner put up solo tallies in the sixth and seventh. Starter Christina Clark (Avon, Ohio/Avon High School) worked out of a jam in the sixth after the Seahawks scored a run of a walk and a pair of singles. The righty got a fly out and made a nifty grab on a liner right back to the circle to end the inning. Amelia Van Orman hit a solo home run to left center in the seventh inning to close the Red Flash lead to two, but the Seahawks wouldn't threaten after the homer.

After Wagner had loaded the bases with one out, Bower got a strike out and a pop-up to short to end the threat. Jordy Frank got the scoring going in the second inning, wrapping a towering fly ball around the left-field foul pole for a two-run homer, scoring Norton who started the inning with a hit by pitch. The Seahawks answered back with a home run of their own in their half of the third. Kaila Smith hit a line drive over the right-field fence for a three-run shot to give Wagner a 3-2 lead. Again, the Red Flash roared back with another five-run frame. Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) started the inning with a double and sister Sierra followed with a hit-by-pitch. Norton brought Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) home and sent Sierra to third with a double to the left center gap, tying the game. Frank picked up RBI three and four with a single to left to give SFU the lead, 5-3. Allyn Bezjak (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin High School) added an RBI single that glanced off the right fielder's glove and Brianna Walker (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) followed with a sacrifice fly to stake Bower and the Red Flash to a 7-3 lead. Wagner added an unearned run in the fourth, cutting the lead to three, but they'd get no closer. Saint Francis added insurance in their half of the fourth on a Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) sacrifice fly that just missed getting out to center. Meadow Uncapher (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant High School) relieved Bower in the fifth and threw three unblemished innings to pick up the save.
