EMMITSBURG, Md.- The Red Flash softball team split a Sunday doubleheader with Mount St. Mary's on a sunny afternoon. Saint Francis lost the first game 9-1 and triumphed in the second contest 10-7.
Game One Recap
MeKenzie Saban (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) commenced the game with a single but the Red Flash could not capitalize on the leadoff hit. Mount St. Mary's struck for two runs using a combination of singles, bunts, and a wild pitch to plate two runs.
Neither squad advanced much of a threat in the second inning outside of a single.
In the third inning, SFU got on the scoreboard with a RBI double courtesy of Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois). Saban slashed a single, Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) followed up with another single, and Norton reached via fielder's choice. Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) launched a double into left center field to score Saban. Norton was sent home and appeared to plug her hand in safety but the home plate umpire called her out to keep the score at 2-1 MSM.
Clark kept the Mountaineers down with another scoreless inning.
In the fourth inning, Saint Francis loaded the bases with two hits and a walk but two strikeouts and a grounder left all three runners stranded and a golden opportunity left by the wayside.
MSM was, once again, held scoreless by Clark.
The Red Flash, with two outs, drew two walks but Mikayla Bower's (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) grounder headed straight to the shortstop and SFU was retired.
MSM unloaded in the bottom of the fifth with a barrage of home runs. Clark's scoreless inning skein ended when the Mountaineers hit three straight home runs. Uncapher entered the circle to obtain the third out but the damage was done and the score was 7-1.
In the top of the sixth inning, SFU hit the ball but the sphere flew right into MSM's gloves.
MSM ended the game in six innings after a fielder's choice and a single scored the fatal runs.
Game Two Recap
In the first inning, SFU had a Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) single but a double-play erased the opportunity.
Mikayla Bower (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) started in the circle for the Red Flash. MSM scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning via one standard method and one peculiar way. A MSM runner attempted to steal second and was successful as the ball flew into center field past the diving glove of Jordan Frank (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Central Catholic). The MSM raced home for the opening run. The second run scored when a MSM double found the gap.
SFU countered in the second inning with two runs as Brittney Crawford (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon McMillan) and Halle Marion (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) singled SFU runners.
MSM hit a home run to start the bottom of the second inning. A potent combo of singles and an error led to a 6-2 lead for the Mountaineers. Christina Clark (Avon, Ohio/Avon High School) entered the circle to relive Bower. The wound could have been fatal but Frank snagged an incredible catch for the third out.
Frank kept the momentum going with a three-run homer in the top of the third inning. The big shot inspired the Red Flash to keep the hitting going. Marion slammed a double for her second RBI of the game and Saban smacked a single for two runs and the lead.
Clark held the Mountaineers off of the scoreboard despite the presence of two baserunners.
SFU went three up and three down in the top of the fourth inning.
MSM drew a walk but Clark's pitching kept the Mountaineers off of the scoreboard.
Saint Francis added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Bower and Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) clubbed back-to-back doubles to score the ninth run. SFU scored the tenth run on a crazy scenario. Marion struck out but the ball escaped the catcher and Marion reached safety but more appositely, Troxell darted home.
Buoyed by the assurance of extra runs, Clark continued to post zeros on the scoreboard.
In the sixth inning, the Red Flash were not able to add to the total. Neither could MSM as Clark kept the batters off balance.
The seventh inning witnessed a Marion single and a Saban double off the wall but Marion was thrown out at the plate to end the frame with no insurance runs.
MSM's comeback attempt was ultimately futile. The Mountaineers scored one run when a missed strike three throw down to first but Clark kept the hammer down and SFU emerged victorious by a 10-7 margin.
