Red Flash Defeats LIU For Third Consecutive Win

Loretto, Pa. – The Saint Francis field hockey team defeated Long Island University, 2-1, in overtime, to pick up its third consecutive win.

After a back and forth first quarter, the Red Flash found itself down one goal for the third match in a row. Evenly matched at three shots apiece, Saint Francis registered two shots on goal, both saved by Long Island.

The offense came alive in the second quarter. The Red Flash outshot the Sharks 7-1, and with just 26 seconds remaining in the half, Livvy Webb (Easton, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) sent a long pass to Taylor Nesmith (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), who beat the goalie to tie the game at one. The goal was Nesmith's sixth of the season and third match in a row with a goal. The score stayed 1-1 heading into the second half.

There was no scoring in the second half. Saint Francis outshot Long Island 9-6 (8-2 SOG) in the third and fourth quarters but could not get past goalkeeper Rachel Vellis, who stopped 16 of 18 Red Flash shots in the match. The teams headed to overtime still tied at one.

In the overtime period, Saint Francis controlled possession and registered four shots compared to zero from Long Island. With less than three minutes remaining in overtime one, Agustina Deharbe (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. Catherine's Moorlands) fought for possession and ended up with the ball. She then passed it to Livvy Webb (Easton, Md./Saints Peter and Paul), who turned and fired a shot from 15 yards out to beat the goalkeeper and win the match. The goal was Webb's first of the season.

"It felt awesome," Webb noted after the match.

"I'm really proud that the team worked together to make it happen. Now we need to keep our momentum and continue to play together and for each other, keeping that intensity through every match."

After a winless start, the Red Flash has now won three matches in a row.

Up next for Saint Francis is another nonconference home match on Sunday, when they take on Rider University noon.
