EMMITSBURG, Md. – Fabio Varella and Marc Fuste led the Saint Francis University men's tennis team at the Mount Saint Mary's Mountaineer Invitational over the weekend.
 
Varella went 3-1 in singles matches during the weekend tournament, earning victories over Howard's Hassimiyou Dieng, Phoenix Williams and Duquesne's Jin Dassanayake. Varella added a 1-2 record in doubles, defeating Pierce Westbrook and Kyle Martin of Howard, 6-4, with partner Samuel Ghigiarelli.
 
Fuste went a perfect 2-0 in singles matches, with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Howard's Gabe Knowles and a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Duquesne's Tamirlan Teberikov. He also went 1-1 in doubles matches, gaining a win with Christian Banti over Knowles and Romani Mayers of Howard.
 
Daniel Vinces/Jordi Garcia, Varella/Fuste, Andrew Teixeira/Zachary Palko and Sebastian Pinos/Matt Blose were all eliminated in the Round of 16. Varella/Ghigiarelli and Teixeira/Palko were both eliminated in the men's consolation semifinals.
 
The Red Flash return to action Oct. 8 for a weekend trip to the Bloomsburg Invite.
