Men’s and Women’s Tennis Head to NEC Championships on Thursday

LORETTO, Pa. – Saint Francis University men's and women's tennis each earned a No. 7 seed in the Northeast Conference Championships that start on Thursday, April 14. Men's tennis will face No. 2 St. Francis Brooklyn and women's tennis will face No. 2 Fairleigh Dickinson. The NEC Championships are a single-elimination bracket format.

Men's Last Time Out
Saint Francis took a split of a Senior Day doubleheader with a 7-0 defeat of West Liberty and 6-1 loss to Penn State. The Red Flash won five-of-six singles matches against West Liberty, led by Fabio Varella's No. 1 win 6-4, 7-6 (7-6) and Marc Fuste's 6-2, 6-2 win in No. 2. Christian Banti ended the day with a 2-0 record in singles after he won 6-3, 7-6 (7-0) in No. 5 against West Liberty and 6-3, 6-4 in No. 6 against Penn State.
 
Scouting St. Francis Brooklyn
The Terriers enter the NEC Championships with the No. 2 seed after a 6-1 conference and 12-6 overall record. St. Francis Brooklyn's only conference loss of the season was to No. 1 Bryant 5-2 on April 9. The Terriers finished the regular season with wins in six-of-seven, which included a 6-1 defeat of the Red Flash on April 1.

The Red Flash hold a 12-2 advantage over the Terriers since 2008. Saint Francis had an 11-match winning streak since April 10, 2010 that featured seven shutout victories snapped on April 1. The Terriers defeated the Red Flash 6-1 this season and Fuste earned the only Saint Francis point with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win in No. 2 singles.

Women's Last Time Out
The Red Flash ended their regular season on April 3 after a 1-2 weekend to end conference play. They earned their only conference win of the season 4-3 over Wagner between a 4-3 loss to St. Francis Brooklyn and 5-2 loss to Sacred Heart. Bente Vandeputte, Valeria Vinces and Dominique Yeo all went 2-1 in singles during the weekend.
 
Scouting Fairleigh Dickinson
The Knights earned a No. 2 seed in the NEC Championships after they finished with a 3-1 conference and 7-6 overall record. Fairleigh Dickinson was the only NEC team to defeat No. 1 LIU this season with a 4-3 win on April 8. They ended the season on a five-game winning streak.

Fairleigh Dickinson holds a 5-2 advantage over Saint Francis since the first meeting in 2013. The Knights won five of the first six meetings, with the only Red Flash win on March 27, 2015, 4-3. Saint Francis won the last meeting between the programs 4-3 on March 27, 2021.

Men's and women's tennis' next match is determined by the outcome on Thursday. A win would advance the Red Flash to the semifinal, while a loss would end the season.
