SELECT GAME NOTES VS. SAN FRANCISCO (FULL GAME NOTES PDF)
FRANKIES TIDBITS IN A FLASH
• Thursday's game between Saint Francis and San Francisco marks the second meeting in the all-time series dating back to the 2017-18 season. The Dons defeated the Red Flash 75-63 in the first meeting between the two teams.
• Isaiah Blackmon and Jamal King paced the Frankies with 13 points apiece, while Keith Braxton added 12 points. For the team once referred to as the Grey Fog, Souley Boum had a game-high 21 points. Jordan Ratnho (17 points) and Frankie Ferrari (11 points) also found double figures.
• The Red Flash is beginning the season on the left coast for the second time in program history and the first since the 2017-18 season when the team opened the year at Saint Mary's and San Francisco. The Dons will be the second game on the schedule in 2023-24 just like the 2017-18 season.
• It will be Saint Francis' third trip to the California under Krimmel. Along with opening the 2017-18 season in the Golden State, the Frankies played UCLA in 2018-19.
• The team will be traveling to the West Coast for the fifth time in team history. Along with the trips under Krimmel, the 1955-56 (Gonzaga, Montana, Seattle), 1975-76 (San Diego State, Chaminade, Hawaii-Hilo) and 1989-90 (USC) teams also played games on the left coast.
• Saint Francis is 0-6 in the state of California all-time and 0-4 Krimmel.
• The Red Flash is 1-2 against the West Coast Conference with a 1-1 mark against Saint Mary's and the loss to the Dons six years ago.
• Saint Francis will be played back-to-back games against the West Coast Conference with the first-ever matchup with Santa Clara looming on Saturday.
• Saint Francis looks to begin the season 1-1 for the 33rd time since the 1950-51 season.
• With a win, the team would be 1-1 under head coach
Rob Krimmel for the eighth time in his tenure and for the the fourth straight campaign.
• The Red Flash have also started 0-2 four times under Krimmel.
• Since 1950-51, the Loretto program has also opened the year 2-0, 12 times and 0-2, 26 times.
• Saint Francis has posted 11 winning seasons after opening the year 1-1 and five times starting 0-2 didn't deter the overall season with a winning mark. The Red Flash has also finished with a .500 record twice with a 1-1 start and twice with an 0-2 beginning since 1950-51.
• In 12 NBA regular-season games between 1956 San Francisco grad Bill Russell and 1955 Saint Francis grad Maurice Stokes, Russell's team won 9 of 12. Stokes averaged 18.2 points per game; Russell averaged 17.4 points per game. Stokes scored 20-plus five times vs. Russell and the Celtics. Russell had two 20-point games and a 30-point game vs. Stokes and Royals.
• In addition, two days after Maurice Stokes scored a then program-record 43 points for the Red Flash against Dayton in the NIT in 1955, San Francisco defeated La Salle 77-63 to win its first of two NCAA Tournament titles.
• Another connection between the two schools is the use of a facility called the War Memorial. The Dons play their home games at the War Memorial at the Sobrato Center. Prior to the opening of the Maurice Stokes Athletic Center in 1972-73, the Johnstown War Memorial was one of the places the team then known as the Frankies would play.
• The team will be traveling cross country for the second-straight year but will be staying on the mainland. Last season, the team played at Hawaii. Seven players and all of the coaching staff that played against the Rainbow Warriors will be on the trip to the Golden State.
• The Frankies were picked eighth in the Northeast Conference preseason poll after finishing last season 13-18 overall and 9-9 in NEC play. The team advanced to the NEC Semifinals and lost to FDU.
• After the three games on the West Coast, Saint Francis will play at Penn State on Tuesday.
AN SFU WIN WOULD
• Be the squad's first win of the season
• Be the squad's second win against the West Coast Conference and first since defeating Saint Mary's 74-59 in Loretto in the 1969-70 season
• Be the team's first win in the state of California
• Be Krimmel's 148th career victory
