Cohen Sets Program Record With Fourth NEC Player Of The Week Nod

Redshirt junior Josh Cohen (Lincroft, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), a member of the Saint Francis men's basketball team, has earned his fourth Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Week award in 2022-23 after taking home the honor for the week of February 6-12. It marks the first time in program history a Red Flash player has earned four top player weekly awards in the same season, surpassing Keith Braxton's three awards in each of his final three seasons in Loretto (2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20).

Cohen averaged 25.5 points, 10.0 rebounds and 4.0 rebounds per game and almost single-handily helped the Red Flash rally from a 17-point deficit and earn a thrilling 78-76 overtime win against Sacred Heart on ESPN U on Thursday. Cohen made his last nine shots in the game against the Pioneers with 14 of those points coming in a 30-13 run to close regulation and then scored all eight points in overtime including the game-winner with 3.6 seconds left. The redshirt junior finished the game with an NEC career-high 27 points along with 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Cohen followed that performance up with a 24-point, nine-rebound, career-high tying six-assist performance against Merrimack on Saturday. He finished the two games shooting 53.8 percent (21-for-39) from the floor and 64.3 percent (9-for-14) from the foul line in the week.

Cohen notched his 13th game with at least 20 points this season and 16th time in his career. He also added nine rebounds or more for the 10th time this season with seven of those occasions accompanying a 20-point output. In addition, he tied a career high with six assists, matching the six helpers he had against Bryant at home on February 3, 2022. Cohen has handed out at least three assists 11 times this season with two games with at least five dimes.

Cohen was also named the NEC Player of the Week for the weeks of November 21-27, 2022, December 5-12, 2023, January 2-8 and November 22-28, 2021, last season. It marks the 22nd time in NEC history a player has been named the top player of the week at least four times in one season and Cohen becomes the 19th different player to reach the feat.

With his fifth NEC Player of the Week award in his career, he joins Braxton as the only two players in team history to earn at least a handful of weekly recognitions. Braxton had nine in his career.

Cohen leads the NEC in scoring (21.7 ppg.), field goal percentage (59.0), while ranking second in minutes played (33.60 pg.), third in offensive rebounds (2.68 rpg.), fourth in rebounding (8.0 rpg.) and sixth in defensive rebounds (5.36 rpg.). On the national stage, the redshirt junior ranks sixth in field goals (209), ninth in scoring, 11th in points (542) and 28th in field goal percentage.

He will go into the upcoming Brooklyn trip needing two points for 1,000 points for his career and 22 rebounds for 500 rebounds in his career. He now has 542 points on the season, which is the fourth most under head coach Rob Krimmel and is now just 10 points shy of the program's Top-15 on the single-season chart for points (552, Kevin Porter, 1970-71). With 11 more field goals made, Cohen will also move into the Top-9 for field goals in a single season, tying Porter's 1970-71 mark with 220 made field goals.
The Red Flash has had a player earn a major award in 11 of the 14 weeks of the season. Along with Cohen's four Player of the Week honors, freshman Landon Moore (Bloomington, Ill./Western Reserve Academy) became one of six players in NEC history to take home the NEC Rookie of the Week award seven times (November 7-12 and November 13-19, December 12-18, December 19-25, December 26-January 1, January 2-8, January 9-16), while freshman Cam Gregory (Accokeek, Md./The Steward School [Va.]) was the top rookie for the week of November 28-December 4.

Cohen has been named an NEC Prime Performer for the 14th time this season (every week this season), while Moore has six honors, junior Maxwell Land (Cincinnati, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) has three recognitions and junior Ronell Giles, Jr. (Brandywine, Md./Charles H. Flowers) has one Prime Performer to his credit.

Saint Francis returns to action with its first of two games in Brooklyn at St. Francis Brooklyn on Thursday. The Terriers are playing their games this season at the ARC at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Game time is 2 p.m.
