Kyshawn George, the son of former Saint Francis men's basketball standout Deon George, was drafted by the Washington Wizards with the number 24 pick after a trade with the New York Knicks in the 2024 NBA Draft on Wednesday night.
Deon George was a four-year letterwinner on the Red Flash men's basketball team from 1990-94 and amassed 1,288 points, 509 rebounds, 118 steals, 113 assists, and 55 blocks in his time in Loretto. The elder George played 28 games off the bench and averaged 2.6 points and 1.4 rebounds per game during the 1990-91 Northeast Conference Championship season.
Deon George is one of seven players in program history to earn two All-NEC first-team recognitions in his career (1992-93, 1993-94). One of only 20 players in team history to register 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in his career, he ranks 22nd in program history in points (16th when he left) and 29th in rebounds (21st when he left). In his last two seasons with Saint Francis, he posted 947 points and 346 rebounds and averaged 17.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game in those 55 games. A three-time NEC Player of the Week, he posted a career-high 31 points and nine rebounds in an 89-69 win at Mount St. Mary's on February 15, 1993.
After his successful stint at Saint Francis, Deon George's basketball journey continued with the Canadian senior men's national team in the mid-1990s. He then embarked on a 12-year professional career overseas, primarily in Switzerland where his son Kyshawn was born on December 12, 2003. Along with Kyshawn, Deon and his wife Sophie have an older son named Jamal.
Kyshawn George averaged 7.8 points and 3.0 rebounds per game and scored a career-high 21 points at Wake Forest on January 7 with the University of Miami.
While Kyshawn George is not a Saint Francis graduate, Red Flash men's basketball has a history of its players being drafted in the NBA, mainly from the Golden Era. Maurice Stokes (Rochester, 1955), Jim McCellan (Cincinnati, 1958), Wilber Trosch (Syracuse, 1960), Sandy Williams (Baltimore, 1964), Larry Lewis (Philadelphia, 1969), Norm Van Lier (Chicago, 1969), Kevin Porter (Baltimore, 1972), Rick Hockenos (Chicago, 1974), Jack Phelan (Golden State, 1974), Joe Schoen (Detroit, 1981) and Mike Iuzzolino (Dallas, 1991) were all drafted after playing in Loretto. Stokes, Van Lier, Porter, Hockenos, and Iuzzolino are the only former Red Flash players to be drafted and play a game in the NBA.
