Loretto, Pa. -- Saint Francis men's volleyball's Kyle Charles and Andrew Deardorff claimed Northeast Conference (NEC) weekly awards for their performances against #8 Loyola Chicago and Rockhurst, the conference announced on Tuesday.
The Red Flash faced their fourth-straight AVCA top-20 opponent in their first match in Chicago against the eighth-ranked Ramblers on Jan. 17. The team then secured their first victory of the season the following day in a 3-1 win versus the Hawks.
Charles earned his first First Point/NEC Men's Volleyball Rookie of the Week and prime performer after totaling 57 assists, six digs, three kills, two blocks, and one service ace between the two matches. The freshman setter had his best performance against Rockhurst, where he tallied 38 assists, four digs, one block, one kill and one service ace. He was the catalyst behind a Red Flash offense that registered a season-best 54 kills. Charles has now registered 74 assists in his first three collegiate starts dating back to Jan. 10 at #2 Long Beach State.
Deardorff notched his sixth career prime performer after posting 22 kills, 12 digs, three aces, three blocks (one solo), and one assist. The senior outside hitter almost secured his second career double double when he recorded 15 kills (.406 hitting percentage) and nine digs versus the Hawks. He added three service aces and three blocks as well.
Men's volleyball will travel to Princeton, N.J. on Friday, Jan. 24 to take on #19 Princeton at 7:00 p.m. The following day will see the Red Flash go from Princeton to Newark and face off against NJIT at 4:00 p.m.
