SELECT GAME NOTES VS. LE MOYNEÂ (FULLÂ GAME NOTES PDF)
FRANKIES TIDBITS IN A FLASH
• Thursday's game between Saint Francis and Le Moyne marks the eighth meeting in the all-time series dating back to the 1948-49 season. The Red Flash leads the series 4-3, including 2-1 in Loretto, but the Dolphins won both meetings last year in the program's first season in NCAA Division I.
• With a win, Saint Francis would notch its first win against Le Moyne in Loretto since an 93-87 win in 1950-51. A win on Thursday would be the first in Pennsylvania since the 1957-58 campaign when the Frankies defeated the Dolphins 71-50 at the Saint Vincent Tournament in Latrobe, Pa.
• The two different dates for wins in Pennsylvania are kind of like if you had a Final Jeopardy clue: "Archibald Leach, Bernard Schwartz, and Lucille LeSueur," and the correct answer is "What were the real names of Cary Grant, Tony Curtis, and Joan Crawford?" but you are like Cliff Clavin, and your response is "Who are three people who've never been in my kitchen?" This also comes into play for head coach
Rob Krimmel's quest for his 100th win at home. With a 74-68 win against LIU on January 24, Krimmel won his 100th game in Cambria County but is now looking to become the first basketball head coach to reach 100 wins at DeGol Arena and join Red Flash men's volleyball head coach
Mike Rumbaugh as the only two coaches to reach that total in school history. Krimmel has 100 home wins, but the Red Flash defeated Navy, 60-57, at the War Memorial in Johnstown on November 11, 2013. The game against Le Moyne will be Krimmel's second attempt at 100 wins at DeGol Arena after falling 68-66 to Wagner on January 26. He won his 150th game on his second try, his 100th game on his third try, and his 100th NEC win on his fourth try.
• Thursday will be Kevin Porter Night. The game before and after Kevin Porter Night has small connections to Porter. Saint Francis played at Mercyhurst on January 30, the first time the Red Flash played in Erie since Porter's first season as a head coach of the Flash, and it was his first road win as a head coach. The Frankies travel to Chicago State for the first time in team history, but Porter is a native of Chicago and went to DeUsable High School. These connections are almost like playing "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon," but "thank you, sir, may I have another." - Chip Diller (Kevin Bacon) in Animal House. John Beilien's first season at the Le Moyne was the same first season Porter started as head coach at Saint Francis. Porter played for the Detroit Pistons (1975-77, 78-79), and Beilien was the senior advisor for player development from 2021-23 for the Pistons.
• Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal are recreating the famous scene in Katz's Deli in New York City from the movie When Harry Met Sally for a Super Bowl ad. The Red Flash's February schedule is kind of like a sandwich. The squad hosts Le Moyne on February 6, and FDU to end the month on February 22 is like the bread, while the four-game road trip to Chicago State (February 8), Stonehill (February 13), CCSU (February 15) and Le Moyne (February 20) is like the meat and cheese of the sandwich. If Saint Francis can have a winning month, Rob Reiner's mother from the movie or in the new version Sydney Sweeney would have the chance to say, "I'll have what she is having," because a winning month would be just like a good sandwich with or without Hellmann's mayo.Â
AN SFU WIN WOULD
• Notch a win in the first home game in February for the third straight year
• Be the team's first win versus Le Moyne since December 27, 1957 and first win in Loretto against the Dolphins since February 9, 1952
• Be head coach Rob Krimmel's 100th win at DeGol Arena
• Notch a win on Kevin Porter Night to win on both nights dedicated to Saint Francis greats (January 24 vs. LIU)
• End a two-game losing streak
ABOUT THE DOLPHINS
• Le Moyne comes into the game 7-16 overall and 2-6 in NEC play after falling 73-61 at Wagner on Saturday.Â
• Le Moyne is in its second year as an NCAA Division I program and is trending toward continuing the year two struggles in year two of NEC play. Merrimack (five games, 2020-21) and Stonehill (eight games, 2023-24) each saw their league win total drop in the second season in the circuit, while Le Moyne had nine NEC wins last season with two wins and eight games to play in 2024-25.
• AJ Dancier paced the Dolphins against Wagner with 24 points, and Dwayne Koroma added 14 points.Â
• Koroma powers the team with 11.9 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, while Dancier (11.8 ppg.), Robby Carmody (11.7 ppg.), and Ocypher Owens (11.1 ppg. and 7.1 rpg.) are also averaging 11.0 points per game.Â
• The Dolphins are coached by Nate Champion, a 2014 graduate of Le Moyne. The NEC has four coaches who are leading their alma maters. Rob Krimmel (Saint Francis), CCSU (Pat Sellers), and Stonehill (Chris Kraus) also lead their alma mater.
LAST TIME WE MET
• Le Moyne swept the season series against Saint Francis in 2023-24, taking a 94-57 decision in Syracuse on January 21, 2024, and a 74-58 decision on March 1, 2024, in Loretto.Â
• Eli Wilborn (13 points) and Carlos Lopez, Jr. (11 points) paced the Red Flash, while Luke Sutherland (18 points), Kaiyem Cleary (15 points), Isaiah Salter (15 points), Nate Fouts (11 points), Trent Mosquera (11 points) and Darrick Jones, Jr. (10 points) each found double figures in the meeting in Syracuse.
• Lopez (17 points), Bobby Rosenberger III (11 points), and Ace Talbert (10 points) each scored double figures for Saint Francis, and Sutherland (22 points), Cleary (16 points) and Jones (12 points) had 10+ points for the Dolphins in Loretto.
LAST TIME OUT
• Saint Francis fell 62-58 at Mercyhurst on January 30. The Red Flash did not play on February 1, with the team registering its first of two byes on the schedule
• Sophomore
Daemar Kelly paced the Red Flash with a career-high 14 points. Junior
Riley Parker added 12 points and a career-high tying seven rebounds, while junior
Valentino Pinedo finished with 12 points and five boards.
TRENDING UP
• When asked if he had any superstitions: "Just one. Whenever I hit a home run, I make certain I touch all four bases." That may sound like a quote from Yogi Berra, but that was a quote from Babe Ruth, born on February 6, 1895. Saint Francis men's basketball does not hit home runs but has recorded a four-point play in each of its last two games, so it's like touching four bases by getting four points. Junior
Riley Parker made a 3-pointer, was fouled toward the end of the first half against Wagner on January 26, and then made his free throw. Sophomore
Daemar Kelly repeated the trick in the first half against Mercyhurst on January 30.
• Kelly is coming off a career-high 14 points against Mercyhurst and has recorded double figures in two of his last three games. The junior registered a then career-high 11 points, eight rebounds, and four assists against LIU on January 24. The sophomore is averaging 11.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in his last three contests. Kelly has posted three 10+ point games in his career, and all three are within a little more than two hours of his home in Pittsburgh. He reached double figures for the first time at Penn State (two hours, 13 minutes away from Pittsburgh) on November 12, and then his performance against LIU was at DeGol Arena (one hour, 29 minutes from Pittsburgh) before his career night at Mercyhurst (one hour, 51 minutes away from Pittsburgh). Granted, the Red Flash also played at Robert Morris on December 21, and he only had four points against the Colonials, so maybe the only explanation is Judge Reinhold in "The Raincoat" episode of Seinfeld because it was too close to Pittsburgh?
• Did you know the oldest boomerangs found in Australia were discovered in Wyrie Swamp, South Australia, and date back about 10,000 years? Some boomerangs return to the thrower, but the vast majority are not. However, boomerangs are super accurate throwing weapons. Parker is like a boomerang since he has shot 50.0 percent from the field (25-for-50) and is averaging 18.8 points per game during his current four-game 10+ point streak. He is searching for his fifth straight 10+ point game for the third time this season. Parker averaged 16.6 points per game in his two previous streaks. He can register 16.6 points per game in his last five contests if he scores eight points against Le Moyne on Thursday, but his streak would also stop at four games.
• "I told you, I wake up every day right here. Right in Punxsutawney. And it's always February 2nd. And there's nothing I can do about it." - Phil Connors from Groundhog Day. This following note might seem like the same note as Parker's note because junior
Valentino Pinedo has scored double figures in four-straight games. Pinedo is looking for his second streak of five 10+ point games. He is averaging 11.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in his last four tilts. The junior recorded 13.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game in his previous five contests.
• Sophomore
Bobby Rosenberger III registered a five-game streak of 10+ points or more to start the season, while freshman
Juan Cranford, Jr. had a team-long seven-game streak at the end of non-conference play. Rosenberger also had a four-game streak with 10 points or more.
• "Maybe I'll find another way / Find another day / With all the changing seasons of my life / Maybe I'll get it right next time" - Estrangled by Guns N Roses. Saint Francis will have at least seven days in between games for the third time this season. The Red Flash lost at Niagara on December 14 after 10 days off and the NEC opener against CCSU after two weeks off. Saint Francis is looking for its first win after having seven days off or more.
NOTE: Axl Rose turns 63 on February 6.
RED FLASH STATE OF THE NEC
• Saint Francis is 3-6 in the league, sitting in the No. 7 spot for the NEC Tournament with Mercyhurst ineligible this season. This week could be significant for the Red Flash, playing the team ahead and behind the Frankies.
• Saint Francis hosts Le Moyne on Thursday, who is a half-game behind the Red Flash, and then the team travels to Chicago State on Saturday, who is a half-game ahead of Saint Francis.
• The following weekend, the Red Flash will travel to Stonehill on February 13. The Skyhawks are a game and a half ahead of Saint Francis thanks to a win earlier this year and NEC leading CCSU on February 15.Â
• The Red Flash then close out the season at Le Moyne (February 20) and at home against FDU (February 22) and Chicago State (March 1). The Frankies defeated FDU 75-71 on January 12.
• The Top-4 teams host the NEC Quarterfinals in March. Despite a 3-6 record, hosting a quarterfinal game is still within reach, trailing Wagner by a game in the standings and a game and a half overall since the Seahawks swept the season series.
• Saint Francis will see Le Moyne and Chicago State for the first time this season this weekend but have completed the season series with LIU (1-1), Mercyhurst (1-1), and Wagner (0-2).
ON THIS DATE
• Saint Francis is 13-8 on this date, holding a 9-2 record at home and 4-6 in Northeast Conference play.
• Keith Braxton scored in the lane with 1.6 seconds left to lift Saint Francis past Sacred Heart 70-68, the last time the Red Flash played on this date in 2020. Braxton finished the game with 23 points, while Isaiah Blackmon added 14 points.Â
• Ronnie Drinnon tallied 23 points and 20 rebounds in a 91-82 win against CCSU in Lorretto on this date in 2016. The 20 boards were the first of two times he posted 20 rebounds in a game that season after corralling a career-high 22 points against FDU on March 2, 2016.
FUN FACTS
• Saint Francis was 6-0 at home and 9-1 overall on this date before the Red Flash joined the Northeast Conference.Â
• While we are honoring the 70th season of Maurice Stokes last season in Loretto and leading the Frankies to the National Invitation Tournament, Stokes and Saint Francis defeated Lawrence Tech at home on this date in 1954. That team also advanced to the NIT, beating BYU 81-68 before falling to Keystone State rival Duquesne 69-63.
• February 6 is Kevin Porter Night in 2025. Porter never played or coached a game with Saint Francis on this date. Porter registered a career-high seven steals along with 13 points as a member of the Detroit Pistons in a 130-111 win against the Kansas City Kings in 1977. The Kings started in Rochester as the Royals drafted Stokes in the second round of 1955, moved to Cincinnati (1957-72) and Kansas City (1972-85), and have been in Sacramento since 1985. Not on this date, but Porter had a career-high 40 points against Milwaukee (December 4, 1977) and 29 assists against Houston (February 24, 1978, also with Detroit. The 29 helpers was an NBA record until Scott Skiles had 30 assists on December 30, 1990.
