WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Saint Francis softball captured its first road victory of the year in a getaway game against Le Moyne, winning 11-9 in an extra-inning thriller Sunday afternoon at the Le Moyne Softball Complex in Syracuse, NY. Freshman Olivia Holtzman played the role of hero in the top of the tenth inning, hitting a three-run homer over the left-field wall to secure the win for the Red Flash.
FLASH MOMENTS
In a back-and-forth affair, despite falling behind the Dolphins twice, the Red Flash lineup refused to concede, tallying 16 hits at the plate, tying their team high for the season.
The scoring began at the top of the fourth inning for Saint Francis, which put up four runs in the frame. Senior Haley Brag got the Red Flash on the board with a sacrifice fly to drive in freshman Olivia Hood, followed by junior Abby Evans singling up the right field line to Holtzman to tie the game at two runs apiece. Not long after, Marianne Labelle reached base on a throwing error, allowing junior Aliya Garroway to score from first and break the tie. Saint Francis scored its final run of the inning off the bat of Annabelle Farmer, who singled to left field to extend the lead to 4-2.
Saint Francis once again retook the lead after sophomore Sofia Zielinski hit an RBI single into center field to score junior Lilly Hicks, making it a 6-5 ballgame. Zielinski made another impact in the game, drawing her sixth walk of the year with the bases loaded to tie the game for the third time at nine runs apiece.
The climax of the game came in the top of the tenth inning. With one runner on base, Holtzman came to the plate looking to make a difference. In a 2-0 count, the underclassman sent her second career home run over the left field fence to give her team an 11-9 lead, ultimately becoming the turning point of the game for the Red Flash.
